Hey guys, I am quite new to Max and use it to transfer data from Max for Live to Processing, since I create graphics with Processing.

I am using fzero~ to get the frequency from a tracks in Ableton Live. When I used it on a midi track it wasn't perfectly responsive as in sometimes, a note was played and the data didn't get the signal instantly all the time. Also on the midi track when the key is pressed for a certain amount of time the data drops to "0".

With audio tracks I am having the same problem above that is not instantly responsive all the time.

Something a bit more general about zerof~ is that its not accurate, when I use an AutoFilter the data outputted by zerof~ doesn't variate..

I'm sure there's a more elaborate way to get the frequency from audio and midi tracks by using something else. I hope you guys can help me :)

Not on Max now but I think fzero~ strongly relies on a fundamental frequency. When you add some filtering, you will introduce some harmonics which can generate mistakes, mostly with high resonance settings. That's a guess, but I think you should try some other externals, like pitch~ or analyzer~.

Excuse my ignorance in Max. I know there are externals like the ones you mentioned pitch~ and analyzer~, but can you put me in the right direction of how I can make it work please?

The obvious question is why not just use the MIDI pitch from the MIDI track, rather than fzero~?

Can you give some example of when fzero~ is performing badly? Maybe I can help track down the problem.

First off, thanks for your reply MZED, I appreciate a lot :)

I am not using the MIDI pitch directly cause I need a float of the actual Audio Signal to control my graphics. I want to grab the data of the sounds character especially when it's modulating. The fzero~ actually does change sometimes but is not perfect especially when applying an Auto Filter. Sometimes when a sample is played (on an audio track), it also doesn't work instantly which doesn't look cool visually.

There are kind of 2 drawbacks on this. I hope I made it clearer now. If not I will post a video link to show whats going on exactly..

download the Tristan Jehan's externals from maxobjects.com for example then put them in a folder and add it to the max search path. Then you will be able to use those like vanilla objects.

Thanks again Stephane. I have downloaded it and put it in the cycling74 folder, now i need to get it working cause it doesn't look as direct as normal objects. I never used externals before. Thanks again for the info :)

I managed to make things work much smoother now thanks to your suggestion Stephane. I opted for the analyzer~ instead of the pitch~ though. The analyzer~ worked much better than the fzero~ and to top it up, you can take other types of data apart of the frequency from a sound.
