Hey, sorry if this is a duplicate topic but I tried searching and couldn't find anything. I guess it's pretty specific.

Anyway, I could do with some help on something. Basically what I'm trying to achieve is this: I want to take an image and generate audio from it. The x axis will be time and the y axis will be frequency, and the mix of frequencies will come from the intensity/colour of the image at each point.

Does anyone have any idea how I could go about this? I haven't really used Jitter much before and I haven't managed to make anything that has worked at all yet so I apologise for the lack of sample patch.

My first idea was to split the image into a qt movie with each frame being 1 pixel long and stepping through them in time, but the problem with that is that (I think) I need the timing in the signal domain, and to be honest I don't really know how to split an image like that either. After that, the only difficult bit I have to figure out is the fft stuff.

I didn't think this idea would be so difficult when I thought of it, and my brain is kind of melting now so any help would be appreciated.

Edit: I'm using Max 5 if that makes a difference.

I think Richad D James actually used metasynth on "the formula", although i might be mistaken.

You might have some luck adapting one of these patches by Jean-Francois Charles.

Check this patch, you can modify sound as spectrogram by clicking/draging on the spectrogram. I have about 40 similar patches, will post them in few days time, just need to finish the accompanying text.

PS: this patch does not allow you to record the sound as spectrogram, so I am sending you one pre-recorded matrix as well. But you can also use the "record patch" from Jean-Francois Charles to generate the matrix/sound/spectrogram.
