Getting smooth horizontal plane info out the wii controller

I have been trying to get the wii to spatialise audio in the horizontal plane - Ive been sending osc from oscilator to max using osculators patch. The accelerometer alone is a bit jerky but usable - especially with an f0.smooth. However the IR with a couple of candles seems to have a very limited azimuth so I am not using it - even with the scale object to increase the azimuth it seems tricky - you have to make sure the infrared is a very specific angle to the ir for it to work at all. Is there a way of getting a smoother motion out of the wii - I mean when you play those games your tennis racket/sword isnt jerking around all over the place ... any ideas ?
