July 28, 2007 | 8:28 am

Hi.

I want to create a polyphonic string synth (Solina’s style, etc.)
Can you help me?
Thank you very much.

Best wishes,
Oscar.

Hello

You can start from the MSP Tutorial 21 examples and adapt them to your Solina software. This tutorial shows you how to use the poly~ object.

About (bowed) string synthesis itself, sorry I have never investigated this. How about a sawtooth / noise balanced oscillator and a bandpass filter :) ? Fortunately there are better solutions, try to type "bowed string synthesis" in google for example.

Maybe you can also find a freeware Solina VSTi that you can load in Max …

actually, this can resemble a bowed string if you add a comb~ or teeth~ filter (this may also sound like approximative brass …)

There are a couple of useful looking articles at http://www.soundonsound.com
- enter ‘string synthesis’ in the Search box.
They’re actually about building string patches on analogue synths, but this
should translate fairly easily into Max patches; start mono, then get your
head round the poly~ object, as suggested,
Cheers
Roger
