help vs binary file?

October 12, 2006 | 4:56 pm

I was poking around in my max-help file and found two types of files
all suffixed with .help:
- Max binary file – icon is a whisk with ‘maxb’ along the bottom
- HELP – icon is a ‘?’ inside a life preserver looking circle

I am able to launch the binary by dragging it onto the Max app but
unable to drag the HELP type onto the Max app

example: absolutepath.help is a HELP type file while the banger.help
is a binary type file

I know the binary types are older and therein lies some of the
explanation…
but can someone point me to the page in the manual where it explains
this?
and if it doesn’t then offer me an explanation?

.help files on OS X with those icons are documents for the Help
Viewer application, a small HTML browser to peruse help files if you
choose the help menu from apps (Apple – ?)

select the .help files that you think are max files, get info, then
say open with Max.app
