i am trying to put a selection of samples from a coll into a buffer and play them with groove~

a changing number (eventually from a sensor) will change the sample being played

i want each sample to play in full before the incoming number selects a new sample and that is played

the samples are of varying length, some only a few seconds, some will be about a minute

the enclosed patch seems to partially work, but sometimes longer samples are cut short and only loop the first few seconds

i am guessing that the groove~ is remembering the length of a previous played sample and therefore plays a following longer sample for that shorter time, though i am not sure and dont know what to do

please see the enclosed patch. can anyone give me a little help please?

I would imagine it's down to how you're detecting the end of the ramp from
groove~'s second outlet.
 There are several ways of doing this, but the most precise is probably to
use delta~ to detect when the change between consecutive samples becomes
negative eg. delta~ ->  edge~

would it be a better method of detecting the end of the sample than the method im using at the moment?

In theory it could happen that by using snapshot~ that the event >= 0.99 is not registered. If the sample is very short and 1% of the playpack time is less then your polling interval you might miss the soundfile end. On the other extreme for very long sample files it could happen that the output ramp value of 0.99 still leaves a remarkable portion of the sample unplayed...

delta~ ->  edge~-> bang 
or
==~ -> edge~-> bang

i tried to modify my patch to fit your examples and if you look at the new patch i uploaded i think i followed your instructions correctly, though the patch still plays only parts of the samples before moving on to the next when the number changes. i tried various combinations of delta~ and edge~ as well but to no avail, the patch seems to (i think) remember the length of the previous sample and play the new one for that length of time.

im racking my brains trying to solve this but im still fairly new to maxmsp and if anyone can offer any more advice i'd be very grateful, again

ive had a look at play~ but from what i can gather from my limited knowledge of maxmsp in the play~ helpfile it doesn't loop the sample like groove~ does. if there's a way around this i'd love any advice.

if the number coming into the coll stays the same then i want the sample to loop, if it changes then i'd like it to play the sample to the end then play the next sample in the coll that corresponds to the number

im using 4.5 too so im sorry but i cant read that patch :(

the right outlet of [line~] sends a bang when the line has reached it's destination, you can use this outlet connected to the play message and some form of gate/deciding mechanism to loop the sample playback with line~
