HI!

I am trying to use the below patch to sync three videos running on Mac Mini’s which are all running 10.6. The mini’s will be networked through an ethernet hub and running Max Runtime. When I load my .MOV file into my patch the Max window says: “can’t find movie.” But a couple of times I have hit esc. and the Jitter window started to play back the movie–not at correct speed or in full screen mode though. Other times nothing shows up at all. I have tested the patch on my main laptop using Runtime and it works perfectly.

I used Migration Assistant to transfer all of my files to the mini’s but wondering if perhaps something important did not get transferred that needs to? I am also noticing that my mini’s are not giving me the option of turning off mirroring displays…

I am one week away from my MFA thesis show and of course put this off until last minute….any help would be much appreciated!

Jenn,

From the outside, not being a max expert…. I wonder if the video can play full frame, full speed over a network like that? What speed network are you using? Is it a hub or a switch? It sounds a bit like lag time over the network? But, I could be wrong….

Switches are a bit faster than hubs (they speak directly to a mac address, where a hub just sends out data like a spray to all networked devices-less efficient), and you do not want to be playing video over a 10baseT hub. To get the full speed out of a network, all the components must be up to snuff. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_over_twisted_pair Seems like for video, you’d want 1000baseT connection. That means the switch (preferable) and the cables etc all have to be 1000 base T. Also, if you want 1000baseT all devices must be connected at that speed. If a slower device is on the network, it slows the whole network down.

Not sure if this is the source of the problem, but since you just mentioned it was giving you trouble over the network, but didn’t mention the speed of the network… I thought I’d add my 2 cents. Could be totally off track…

Wishing you the best of luck on your thesis! Cynthia and I are trying to get there for the show. Looking forward to it. Evie

hey Evie!

The problem, for now, is not from the hub but from the actual patch and probably something to do with my mini’s. I am going to comb through them to make sure all of the necessary files got transferred over properly.

But I just realized that I did get a switch: http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/411472/Netgear-FS605-5-Port-10100-Fast/ can you tell me if this is a good one? This is my first time working with a networked piece so I am a complete dumbass when it comes to this stuff.

I didn’t look too deeply into your patch, but if you can’t get it figured out in time, you can probably do what you want with my MultiScreener apps (patches included if you want to use it as a reliable starting point for customization):

cool, thanks for sending that along. I will definitely check it out after I am done with this round. In the meantime, I have been able to load my movies properly to full screen mode but still trying to work out the ethernet configuration to get the videos to sync. I read on your multiscreener guidelines about the 10.6 warning. My mini’s are running 10.6, do you think this will cause some problems for me?

10.6 should be fine, but some Jitter stuff doesn’t work unless you install Quicktime 7 from your installer DVD. “Quickime X” in 10.6 is weird and unfinished, and Jitter isn’t designed to use the new features anyway, like hardware h264 decoding :(
