Hercules Firewire 1612

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any experience using the new Hercules Firewire 1612 interface with Max/MSP? It's Mac compatible, has tons of i/o, and the price is right, I just would rather hear something from someone who actually has used it before I go ahead and buy it. What are the pluses, minuses, does it work with Max well? Is it firewire bus powered or external (can't find that spec online). I haven't really heard anything about the reliability of the company either so am a bit hesitant to buy right away. Can anyone out there help me?

Alright, forget it, I just bought it, it was so cheap, down to $300! If anyone is thinking about buying it and wants to know how it works with Max or just in general, let me know. I can tell you in 5-7 working days.

I found it online at musiciansfriend.com, though I'm not sure they ship to europe. Probably for an extra cost i'd imagine

hi MisterW
so, what about the Hercules? It's a good interface? Good drivers and software support?

Well, i received it but it was one that had been sent back, presumably for repairs. I say this because the original seals were broken so I'm assuming someone had sent it back. Anyways, i got it set up and hooked up to my computer no problem. I write a quick program in Max to check it out...and...it works in max perfectly, just how i expected....BUT....the interface itself was a piece of crap. The preamps were noisy, the hi-Z button did absolutely nothing, the outputs were all noisy, the instrument/XLR inputs had bad connections meaning you often had to wiggle them to get a connection, the pots were all scratchy and you, again, often had to wiggle them to get a signal. So yeah, it was crap.

However, i convinced myself that MAYBE this is just the suppliers fault and that I should return it and get a brand new one that hadn't been opened, and that hopefully it will be in better condition. It's backordered until Mar 17 so once i get the new one I can report back how it works and if it really is a crappy interface or if I was just unlucky.

Cheers,
matt
