High resolution webcameras

March 12, 2007 | 6:29 pm

Hi all.

Has anyone ever used a high resolution webcam (Greater than 640*480).

Specifically I’m looking at the DFK 31AF03 from the Imaging Source (1024*768).

Would this be too much for a mac mini to handle (particularly when
compositing with an even larger matrix)?

Any reports on using anything of this nature, particularly regarding
performance, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Scott,

i use a DFK 31AF03 (
http://www.theimagingsource.com/en/products/cameras/firewire_color/dfk31af03/overview/
)
on a macmini PPC 1.4Ghz for a long duration (> 1 year) time-lapse
movie project (so i grab one picture every 30 seconds…);

when i received this camera, i did some quick test and it seems to
grab at 15fps or even 30fps, but i don’t think you could do any heavy
compositing with 1024×768 matrix on such a machine (maybe on a
macmini intel this would be better); the camera is not the problem,
the cpu is the problem.

best,
