I would really love to devise a way to re-order effects patchers without editing a patch and moving patch cables by hand. Has anyone tried a more elegant way?

I think I once saw a patch that had guitar effects displayed inside of windows. Dragging the windows next to each other would reorder the effects (using a js object?).

Thanks for the replies. I've looked at matrix~ but I'm not sure that's really what I want.

-The object doesn't seem to apply to routing patches through each other, but rather to filtering many sounds down into the same few outlets (see the help file).

-I don't want to run more than one input into the same output.

-It only works for audio! I want to do this with MIDI and video processing abstractions too!

I suppose that's possible, but I think you need to

look a bit more carefully, given your original

It's an arbitrary N inlet N outlet matrix - unless you're

thinking of something you wouldn't do with any ordinary

run-of-the-mill studio patchbay [in which case you really

didn't describe your original project at all clearly], it's

Look at the Inspector for the matrixctrl object more

closely. You can set it up so that you can only route

one row to one column or vice-versa. That's what most

If you look carefully at the help file for the matrixctrl

object, you'll notice the "See Also" bit in the lower right

hand corner. If you're hunting around for something you're

not sure about, it's a good idea to take a look at the

objects listed here [I notice that the router object isn't

listed under the matrix~ object, but that's something I can

easily correct]. The matrixctrl object lists an object called

router - it works exactly like the matrixctrl object 

Looking at this stuff is a good habit to develop, since

it's a great way to find objects "sort of like" something,

and since you may serendipitously stumble on something you

are also thinking about in another context.

Knock yourself out. But I think everything you need is already

present, unless I totally misunderstand your original post.

Hey, thanks for the help guys. Looks like I should continue to look at matrixctrl and router. I'm still having a bit of trouble working out how to connect everything up. I know I need to start by feeding data (video or whatever) in but after it hits the first effect it needs to be fed back into the router. Eventually it needs to leave the effects and go out (to mixer, video window, etc). I'm a little confused how that all works. I'll see what I can do.

I solved it! I learned that you need TWO router objects to feedback properly.

I'll post the patch I made in case someone else can learn from it. Make sure you replace [append 1], [append 2], etc to things that are more interesting :) Thanks Chris and Greg!

I haven't looked at your patch yet, but one-router~ routing is possible, if a little tricky.

Thanks for the patch. I understand how it works, but the matrixctrl seemed very counter-intuitive. In my patch, you can read the matrixctrl from left to right to know which effects will happen. Is there a way to do that with a single router object?
