i am trying to use a patch that works best on 4.6, but i have 5.1 on my computer. how can i have two versions installed on my mac version 10.6.4?

Try temporarily renaming/moving the current version before you install the new instance, this should do the trick, you can always move it back/revert to the original name afterwards.

There is no issue having 4.6 and 5.1 installed at the same time - I have been running this way for several years now...

The apps/files are located differently and named differntly already so there is no need to do anything before installing...
