Using several looping buffers as well as some other sound-generators, is there a clever way to monitor selected streams of audio, only letting certain ones out of the system? Much like a DJ has the capability to take a little time to match beats before putting the new sound into the mix that goes out live…but the whole time, the original record is playing.

I know I could probably do something with a multi-channel sound card and do the mixing externally, but if there’s a clever way to route stuff within Max before it goes out, well, that’s free…. ;)

Thanks!

not gonna happen you know, creating audio_outs out of nothing ; )

if you run it throuh a mixer, you could temporarily set it to mono and use the other channel for monitoring.

you could also stream over the net to another computer.

you could also just get a multichannel sound card, they’re not that expensive, like echo indigo dj for laptops.

a ‘real’ dj mixer has a ‘cue’ button/knob that sends the channel to a
SEPARATE output. You should add such a button/knob to your patch, but you
will need to have at least 4 output channels on your soundcard. Or you
could use L for output and R for monitor.

The indigo DJ card is a good choice for this if you don’t have the right
soundcard and want to buy an inexpensive one. the indigo dj was designed
with this exact use in mind.
