how to notify a buffer object that its contents has changed

hi,
i’m working on an external that manipulates the contents of a buffer~
object.
how do i notify buffer~ that its data has changed, e.g. in order to
get a display update of
the waveform~ object?

Speaking of which, is there an etiquette/must-do list for externals
that write into buffers~?
