I know sfplay~ doesn't support mp3 files but I wonder if anyone knows a trick to play mp3 in Max.

Is there a way to automate a convertion from mp3 to Aiff , or could jitter be of any help because it support Quicktime wich support mpr3 itself?

Yes, Jitter will work because jit.qt.movie plays mp3 files.

You can also use buffer~ with the message "import" to import any QuickTime-compatible audio file.

I am brand new with Jitter, I read the reference in manual but I am not quite sure it will provide what I use with sfplay~.

Is there a particular reason you want to read the files from the hard drives instead of loading them into RAM? Since recent computers can have massive amounts of RAM vs the size of a typical audiofile this is not really a problem anymore.

you can't do this with jt.qt.movie. jit.qt.movie will use QT for playback. Check out spigot~ for bringing the audio from a QT into Max. You could also try to use Soundflower for routing the audio from the system output (QT) to MaxMSP.

well, that's a good point, but I work on a patch that should handle around 8 players simultaenously, the audio files could be long ones (more than 3 minutes) and possibly multichannel.

A laptop can have 3 or 4 Go ram,but I want this patch to be democratic, so a casual 1Go ram laptop should suffice.

ok,so Max tells QT to load and play the file beside Max, not inside.

That's a very important detail, to keep in mind for sure when I will deal with jitter and QT.

That's right, and could be very interesting thinking of CAF multichannel/compressed files.
