How to send midi from Logic 5 (PC) to MAX?

July 1, 2008 | 11:31 am

Hello, I try to use Rewire for sending midi from Logic 5 (sampler – NI Kontakt) to Max/Msp but it doesn’t work.
What I do I read at http://www.cycling74.com/forums/index.php?t=msg&rid=2723&S=98e215bca4895c32d2f85558e10d665d&th=28755&goto=117878#msg_117878
I can describe my scheme:

- I open Logic, import sample to Audio (or use sampler).
- Then open MAX. Create ezadc~ -> delay -> ezdac~. Press Help and click DAC to set the audio driver to ad_rewire. Audio – ON.

(In the comment window I see – Unable to load rewire DLL. Check rewire installation).

And i hear just Logic sounds but nothing happens with MAX.
What I do wrong?

i personally avoid rewire and just port through the midi using midi
yoke or similar. especially if you are going from logic to max. if
you are going the other way then rewire can be useful

Is this with Max 4.6 or Max 5?

I believe that Max 4.6 will install ReWire.dll into your c:windowssystem32 folder. However, I also believe that this DLL is missing from the Max 5 installer.

The ReWire.dll file is installed by most audio applications that use ReWire. So, the fact that Max 5 is not installing it is easy to miss. Until we add ReWire.dll to the Max 5 installer you can try to get this to work by installing either Max 4.6 or even the Max 4.6 Runtime would probably do it. Or, you could install some other audio app (a demo would work). Just note that the ReWire.dll might get deleted after uninstalling the app.

Another option is this:
1. Install Max 4.6.
2. Copy ReWire.dll from c:windowssystem32 to a safe place.
3. Uninstall Max 4.6.
4. Copy the ReWire.dll back into c:windowssystem32.

This all assumes of course that you have not installed Max 4.6 already but you have installed Max 5.

Good luck,
Rob
