What values would you guys recommend using to make an effective scratching sound using phasors…

Do the phasor~ values have to be within a certain range of normal phasor~ buffer playback speed?

I have found that changing the sign of the value of phasor~ works o.k. but that doesn’t sound realistic. Am I looking at somewhere between 0.1 to 2.0 times the original speed of the phasor?

I’ve also tried using the line object to smooth out the playback but it still doesn’t create a convincing effect.

Does anyone have any suggestions or know of a better sounding solution?

Thanks,

Rhys

anything else is just going to sound like a poor imitation of vinyl (and even mspinky sounds like crap sometimes, but its as close as you’ll get)

otherwise, don’t try and reproduce vinyl, but try to find new and interesting sounds.

If you are willing to take a plunge in the world of FOSS, there is
TerminatorX which does a pretty decent job of simulating vinyl scratching…

You may want to contact the author to tell them this. I am sure they’ll very
much appreciate it. As for FOSS stuff, there’s plenty more where that came
from. See http://apps.linuxaudio.org/ for more info.

Best wishes,

Depends what scratching means to you. If its vinyl scratching, you could
record a real scratching sound and play that while scratching. Make it
very long, and choose a random part of it to play.

That means you have a patch already, that would tell more about your
ideas than any words. It seems you run along a sound file, but realistic
scratching is jumping and bumping along… ;-)

> I’ve also tried using the line object to smooth out the playback but

Hard to tell, if only you know what you find convincing…
