I am playing around with 4 variable resistors and some push buttons.

When I press the switch I want each press to change the pathway of one of the resistors signal.

There are 4 paths that I would want it to take at different times.

I was thinking of using a gate so that when it went from 1 to 4 it would send the resistor signal down a different path but I dont have enough digital inputs to have a different button for each pathway (4 switches by 4 paths).

I was thinking I could set it up so that I would have one button and as I pressed that it would go from 1, 2, 3 and once it reached 4 and the button was pressed again it would reset back to 1. Think of it like the tab button on Windows machines (maybe mac?). It cycles through the different places you can have a cursor on a window and goes around in a loop if you keep pressing it.

I really dont know how to describe this and my Max knowledge is basic, all home taught stuff so my searches failed. I hope I could explain that well enough.

I think your best bet is something like cycle, decode or a simple select would perhaps suffice. You can choose counter or inc dec to suit your needs.

Thanks for that. I can the logic of that patch you posted.

Ill start looking around for it now but while I am here I have since found that when I press the switch I get a bang saying the switch is open but when I let go of the switch I get a band saying it has closed. I did not expect the closing bang. Is there a way I can ignore the negative bangs?

I suppose a work around would be to have the switch bang into a number message, 1, so it will increase the counter but then as there are two separate bangs I would have to make the counter twice as big.

Probably the worst way to do it haha.

then ignore decode and use the [select] object instead to output a bang when each number is selected.
