I'm looking for a device
I want to set up all of my instruments in a really special way. I want to create nice sounding filter automated music with knobs. I need to be able to set up the filters the way that I want though. My definition of a filter is any knob that can be turned to illicit a change in pitch. I need to be able to assign multiple filters to a single physical knob in different ratios.
so you want to turn a knob and change many pitches at the same time, but in different ratios?
Any midi controller can be used to do this. And most joysticks. And your mouse. And your webcam. And a twitter feed. And the stock market.
Well tell me how to get it popping then. What device would I tell my midi controller to control? The max device your about to tell me about should allow me to map multiple knobs to a single knob in different ratios.
ctlin->scale->makenote, for instance? You’re dreadfully vague about what you… want.
Honestly, taking a controller input and just applying different divisions of that input would work.
"pitches" means sooo many things, really. Do you want to make midi notes for external synths? Or tight frequency bands for an eq? Or do pitchshifting, for instance?
Like some kind of midi controller thing that allows me to macro knob things but them actually being macro knobs and not just mapping knobs.
well, let’s separate the hardware from the software, here, because I’m still not following, I’m afraid:
the hardware: A knob is a knob is a knob. You can use any knob you’d like, it doesn’t even have to be midi, a lot of times it could be some other protocol. "mapping knobs" and "macro" knobs are just knobs.
the software: I don’t even exactly know what you mean by "mapping knobs" – you can split any control signal in max however you’d like and control as many processes as you’d like at the same time. So that would probably be "macro knobs" in your terminology, correct?
So what I’m saying is that there aren’t any hurdles there – get a controller, build the patch and you’ll get the reward of inventing your own macro knob device.
I don’t have the slightest clue how to do that. I just want someone to give me instrument racks that use this max device to make Massive’s paramaters and Guitar Rig 5′s parameters controllable in designed ratios that make turning each knob musically tasteful. Turning each knob on my midi controller should be controlling more than one parameter in a certain range.
That doesn’t need max. I’m not sure about other DAWs midi-mapping but Audiomulch lets you set the maximum and minimum and even draw in non-linear curves. That should basically let you do everything you want to.
"Instrument racks" sounds like you’re using Ableton Live, in which case you’re on the completely wrong site for such advice.
Also, before you go over to those forums I would suggest you better formulate your question instead of being vague and not even giving all the information about what you want to do from the beginning like you’ve done here.
>I just want someone to give me instrument racks
ah. yeah, I’m not going there. You may find some that are willing to do your work for you, but it ain’t gon’ be me, bruh.
The audiomulch suggestion doesnt fit my needs. I need to be able to create instruments the way that i want to create instruments.
You are able to set ranges for MIDI controls in LIVE. Alternately look at using a [dial] with [split] and [scale] or [table] and then [ctlout] – I think to do this I had to use the IAC bus to send MIDI out and back into LIVE. Looking at the helpfiles and references for these objects should get you a lot closer.
You don’t need Max for what you want to do. Go in Live, assign a knob (after enabled it in preferences, of course) to the "knobs" you want in your plug-ins (ie Massive etc) and set their respective range in the Midi mapping window. Done.
"The audiomulch suggestion doesnt fit my needs. I need to be able to create instruments the way that i want to create instruments."
Could you be more vague? What DAW are you using? You’re expecting someone to make something for you but you give no clues as to what exactly they would be making. Are you talking about racks in Live? If you are then I repeat: this isn’t the Ableton forum. That’s over here: http://forum.ableton.com/index.php
all this is so cunfused. I love the max forum for people who still try to help, although obviously DariousBlount doesn’t even try to formulate a clear question it seems to me(sorry if i’m wrong, please try harder).
I thought this it was a Xzibit moment – "Yo Dawg’ I herd u like creating instruments so I created an instrument that lets u create instruments will u create instruments."
Someone needs to create him an instrument that creates coherent questions.
Actually the more I look at that first post I think this person has to be trolling.
"My definition of a filter is any knob that can be turned to illicit a change in pitch."
I believe the appropriate internet response to this is "LOL WUT" :-/
hehe this is the most hilarious thread in quite a while… me thinks it’s a hoax from the beginning though.
this is another gem: "parameters controllable in designed ratios that make turning each knob musically tasteful."
judging from the stylistic arabesques i wouldn’t be surprised if it’s gregory taylor having a little fun with us ;)
I blame M4L
too many chumps up in here
and the OP’s name…..that’s very familiar too
ps "yo dawg" – woot woot woot
