I'm trying to create a rather quick and dirty patch for an improv coming up. What I would like to be able to do is sample resonant percussion instruments, have them analyzed with fiddle~ for various characteristics, and pseudo-recreate them. I'm fine with the recreation being a little "rough". I will be triggering the sounds from a MIDI drum pad. The idea is to have sounds that share similar sonic characteristics with the instruments being played by another live performer, as he will be playing the actual instruments that the samples were taken from.

I've copied/pasted the little bit of work I've done on this so far. In a lot of ways, I'm fine with the sound that this creates. For instance, I tried it with a sample of a brake drum, and the resulting sound was reminiscent of the brake drum while still having a "synthesized" quality. The main thing that I'd like to fix is a sort of "chirpie" sound I'm getting. I think that this happens because the analysis from fiddle~ is not always solid i.e. the sinusoidal components might bounce between partials or drop to zero occasionally. I've tried slide~ and rampsmooth~ to help this, but that just creates a loopy, slide-y sound. I'm guessing that what I REALLY need is to know how to better use fiddle~ and get an analysis that is more "locked in".

look into using [lbyl] ("Look Before You Leap") from cnmat.

it looks like you could get pretty close to something pretty decent if you use this to filter the output from fiddle by tweaking the quota and tolerance parameters.

while you're at it.. you might want to try if pitch~ by Tristan Jehan works better for you than fiddle~.
