Hi, I'm very new to Max and I am making a sampler using an xbox guitar hero controller. I have set it up so that when a single coloured button and the strummer are pressed a aif file plays. I then set it so that when 2 coloured buttons are pressed along with the strummer it plays a different sound file. The Problem is that it plays the original file ontop of the new file and I can't work out how to make each patch individual to each button control. Is there a way of setting an instance to each of the patches??

could be many things... could you post the relevant parts of the patch? that way it's easier to give you hand...

You can do instances and use arguments to them to access only the specific buttons you want, if you set it up right. However, in your case you need a bit more, since you can have a single button press mean one thing, but two buttons (one of which is that same one) means something else, but NOT the single-press (hence why you get two soundfiles playing at once). See what I mean? You need a way to know if only the one, or only both, are pressed, plus I'm assuming you want other combinations too.

It could be a little tricky to implement, but for starters, look into the [match] object. You can have multiple [match] objects, each with their own single- or multiple-button lists to match, then only when you get (say) buttons 1, 2, and 5 does it play (sound file X). For ease of organization, you can use a [coll] with each combination in an index. Then you compare the list coming in with each entry in the [coll], again using [match].

With 5 buttons that's a lot of combinations...

Could you also tell us what data the buttons and the strummer are sending? Patch in a [print] object and let us know what values you get for each action. Then we'd get a better idea of how to help you.

Each of the coloured buttons show the value 128 when pressed and 0 when released. The strummer button sits at -1 and 18000 when strummed down.

This patch should do the trick. It converts the button presses into a list of ones and zeros, then turns this binary number into a regular base 10 number to show which buttons have been pressed and then stores this number and only outputs it when the strum bar has been strummed. You could extend it to work with any number of buttons and it will report all possible combinations of buttons. Use the bangs to stop/start playback of your audio files.

Thats Great!! Thanks very much! Is it just a case of putting a sfplay object underneath each bang to play the file I want? also do I just add additional buttons within that patch to be able to use all five buttons and strummer and add extra bangs?

Yep, to extend it just add extra arguments to the [pak] object and put a [/ 128] into each inlet. Don't forget that the buttons are in reverse order though. And remember with binary counting button 3 will return 4, button 4 will return 8, buttons 2, 4 and 5 together will return 26 etc etc.

If you look in the [sfplay~] helpfile you'll see that to play from the beginning you need to send it the number 1, so you could use a [t 1] after each bang. However there are many other ways of triggering audio. How you do it is entirely up to you.

just playing around with it as you sent it... i notice that when u hit the strummer alone it triggers the first bang, when u do it with button one and the strummer it hits bang two and so on, but when the check boxes are unchecked it still plays the final bang no matter what combination? If you understand what I mean?

That doesn't happen to me. You're definitely clicking both the zero buttons to turn off the toggles? It should go back to zero and send a bang out the first outlet.

Ah I got it! This may be a stupid question but how can I get it to reset the 0 when the button is released rather than having to press it manually?

You could just connect the outlets of all your [/ 128] objects to a [sel 0] and that will send a bang whenever any of the keys is released. I'd recommend working your way through the tutorials that come with max, they explain a few key concepts you need to know and will introduce you to a lot of new objects you might find helpful.
