I am running into max crashes and am stuck with debugging.

I can’t reproduce the crash here doing it half a dozen times or so. Lets first do a clean install.
To clean out Max 5 entirely, remove these items:
~/Library/Preferences/Max5 Preferences Folder
Then download and reinstall the latest Max 5 release, 5.1.5:
