Hi!

I have run into an error that appears when starting the application.

I had just installed Max v 4.6.3, leaving jitter 1.6.2 untouched. This worked fine. I then installed “java_app_platform_sdk-5_02-windows.exe”. After this, the following occurs: i start max and it loads fine until it needs to startup Jitter, where it stops at a “Stack overflow” error message. Following its instructions and restarting from the edit menu does not help, and the DSP-status window for example, is not responding. Note that this happens before the application even finishes starting up, so it cannot have been caused by any of my patches.

I uninstalled the java app platform sdk, max, and jitter. I deleted the Cycling74 directory. Even deleted all entries I can find in the registry that contain the string “Cycling”.

Still, after reinstalling Max/MSP and Jitter, the above happens. I even attempted reverting to Max version 4.6.2, but it didn’t help. Finally, I also tried starting MAX without having jitter installed, this worked, but I need jitter, so it is not an option…

Could you please help me with fixing the installation?

Best regards,
Ilias Bergstrom

No, as I mentioned, this happens before the app even gets a chance to load completely, just before the Jitter splash screen!

And I suspect it has something to do with Jitter because when I uninstall it, Max/MSP works fine.

Did that, and cleared the registry from every key containing the key “cykling” as well :)

At the moment I’ve just set it up on a new computer, having given up on the one I was using for MAX & Jitter…

It must have something to do with the Java developer package I installed, but I cannot revert to a clean system so as to recreate it, nor would i like to risk ruining my other, functioning system either :)

Realized one more thing: it all works well, if my thumbdrive with all my max patches is not connected to the computer!!!

So somehow, during startup, the thumbdrive is scanned, and for some weird reason it crashes… but as i said, this is before i ever even get the chance to load a patch!

To clean out MaxMSP 4.6.x entirely, remove these items:
~/Library/Preferences/Max 4.6 Preferences
../Library/Frameworks/MaxAPI.framework
../Library/Frameworks/MaxAudioAPI.framework
../Library/Frameworks/MaxJSRef.framework
../Library/Frameworks/JitterAPI.framework
../Library/CFMSupport/MaxCFMAdaptor and MaxAudioCFMAdaptor
/Applications/MaxMSP 4.6

Then:
- Install Max
-> launch Max: does it work?
- if it launch successfully Install Jitter
-> launch Max

Sorry for not replying, since I managed to get my main system working by starting max up without the thumbdrive in place, I’m now rushing to complete some work I had to do that got behind because of this glitch. I will look at it again when I’m back on track schedule-wise, thank you for the interest!

That’s right, those Framework might still be there from Max 4.5 though.

The original message clearly stated that the poster was a windows user…

I think it’s a java-problem, personally. I have had Jitter crash on
startup for a while, until I found out that I needed to roll back to an
older version of Java.

http://java.sun.com/products/archive/

Hope this helps,
Andreas.

You’re right… Anyhow, the problem comes from “bad files in the
search path”.

This problem is fixed with Max 4.6.3.
