Tenure-Track Position in Music Composition and Technology

The Department of Music at the University of Alberta seeks
applications for a position in
Music Composition and Technology. The position is tenure-track at the
Assistant or
Associate level. Applicants should have a completed doctorate (either
PhD or DMus).
The successful candidate will be an established composer having clear
potential for
ongoing national and international recognition and scholarly
activity. Primary research
expectations include composition and creative work in the electronic
medium, with
acoustic composition being of secondary importance. An interest in
developing both new
technology-based performance and teaching activities within the Music
Department, and
new artistic, cross-disciplinary performance and teaching
collaborations between the
Department of Music and other areas within the Fine Arts will be
regarded highly. Duties
will include teaching courses and seminars within the areas of
specialization, graduate
student supervision (at both Masters and Doctoral levels), and
committee work at all
levels. Developing and maintaining the electronic music facilities is
a central expectation,
and active participation in seeking external funding for research and
advanced technical
resources is required.

Areas of expertise should include, but are not limited to, Music
Composition (both
electronic and acoustic), a thorough familiarization of, and
experience with, existing and
developing music and media technologies, experience in maintaining
and developing an
electronic music facility, the ability to facilitate public
performances of new and existing
repertoires (including any combination of electronic, acoustic,
interactive and
collaborative media), music analysis with particular reference to
20th-century and recent
repertoires. Additional expertise in computer programming and/or
software development,
as well as expertise or professional experience in artistic
directorship will be regarded as
strong assets.

Salary is commensurate with rank, with the Assistant rank beginning
at $55,455 (2006/07
level). The position includes the full range of benefits, and will
commence July 01, 2007.
