Keith Fullerton Whitman patches

Hello,

When I saw this video http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3026912287343023659&q=keith-fullerton-whitman&ei=HVhKSObBKJSw2QKw9NnBDA&hl=ru I was really inspired by his music and I found at his site what max/msp patches he uses http://www.keithfullertonwhitman.com/projects/maxmsp.html

Well, can you please recommend me any patches which are like these especially for pads?

You should better take a look at this page if you want to create the kind of drones. It’s a great tutorial for Max/MSP, it helped me a lot to find how to make beautiful drones.

The main idea to create drones like this is to use a lot of delays with a lot of feedback.
You send sounds with smooth long attack, then you’ll get a continuous sound. Granulation with a lot of voices and long grains can work similarly as a delay

The track Toulouse 01 Octobre uses a combination of delay and granulation with a lot of feedback between every modules.

Feedback is the key to get beautiful long auto-moving sounds.

Thank you Bertrand, as you understood me right I want to create such kinds of drones yes.
I read the tutorial and it’s very interesting but not easy to understand because I’m newbie with Max/Msp and didn’t create patches by myself yet, though I will. I listened to your music and I like it very much.

Can you please share your any patch with such parameters for long auto-moving drones? It would be more easier to understand all the scheme.

If you want to learn Max, you have to build things yourself, even if at the beginning it will sound rubbish.

If I share a complete system, you’ll get stuck to it because you will not see what to change to it.
You’ll maybe understand what everything do but you’ll miss the deep understanding.

Keith Fullerton Whitman’s big delay =

It consists of 16 delays in parallel (8 on the left and 8 on the right)

Left delay times = 610 987 1597 2584 4181 6765 10946 17711
Right delay times = 710 1087 1697 2684 4281 6865 11046 17811

Look at Tutorial 28 : Delay with Feedback

You’ll see, it’s not that hard.
Try to experiment on where to make the feedback loop.
There’s a lot of possibilities that will drastically change your sound.

An other point, don’t be afraid to try things, it’s the best way to finally understand and have a wide view of the possibilities.

Thank you, you’re right Bertrand
It would be much better to understand MAX learning it by myself, although I have some questions.
I don’t have a guitar and I’m going to use the samples as input for such drones, I talked with my friend and he told me that I can try NI Kontakt (as sampler) through Rewire to MAX instead of creating Sampler in MAX and I believed that it’s a good idea till my Lap and Max currently decided not to work together (well, maybe I’ll get any help http://www.cycling74.com/forums/index.php?t=msg&th=34538&start=0&rid=6983&S=6ad4603dbad9fbdd7d98086e02d95d92)
So, I continued experimenting with MAX and loaded sfplay~ and then connected it to delay~ and nothing happens, I hear just clear sound without any delay. What I do wrong? I didn’t find any information concerning this in tutorial and would be much appreciated for your help.

connect the delay directly to the dac~ and the delay~, which is also connected to the dac~. you have to hear the non-delayed and delayed signal for the familiar ‘echo’ effect to work.

You should better use the duo tapin~/tapout~ than delay~.
Here is a simple Mono delay unit of 2500 ms with feedback possibilities.

Maybe nothing happens in your patch because to ear the delay you need to ear the undelayed sound, otherwise you’ll ear only one sound.

I can’t understand why I can’t do that simple patch, I do everything you recommend but something wrong with it.
Well, to be more concrete here is the sample http://visuel.strana.germany.ru/BNJ.EFF%2007.wav and my patch http://visuel.strana.germany.ru/delay.pat (version with delays~)
Sure there are mistakes, but what kind of? Please help me to make out this start and every thing else I’ll do by myself.

You should copy your patch and paste it directly to the forum.

It seems your are a Max 4 user.

Well…

I don’t have a lot of things to say.
You really need to look at the Max tutorials.
Even if you’ll not make any sounds, it will help you to understand what Max is and how to use it.

You have to understand what means these terms in the Max language :

Object (function)
Message
Inlet
Outlet
Argument

So, I learned Max tutorials and created patch which you can see here http://i33.tinypic.com/i2lrfa.jpg as well I used all numbers which was used by Keith. I hear my sound, hear how delays occurs, but it sounds like "bum… (about 20sec)…bum", hm, what I did wrong again?

According to your patch, that’s what you should expect. What’s wrong
with it?

Why don’t you use a single tapin~/tapout~??? That patch doesn’t make
much sense to me…
(You can have multiple taps in a single tapout~ by the way…;-)

jonathan segel and Kyred, Oh! thank you so much!
For best result we have to use in this patch veeery looong samples, right? (or live guitar f.e.) because if not, it sounds not so nice as in video due to my short sample of banjo which was used in my patch.
