I’ve ordered one anyway, but i’ll be an awful lot happier to learn that it sits nicely outside of ableton in my maxmsp environment (aot m4l) as a poor man’s ‘monome’

just keen for any ‘insider’ views whilst i count down the days for arrival ? …..

I’m happy to see something cheap that offers an array of buttons. However, I would like to see more expressive controllers. Why are all the new midicontrollers like the APC, Livid, and even the monome fail to feature expressive control options like velocity and aftertouch? I know the Monome has the tilt sensor, but in my experience using the Monome’s tilt sensor is crude to say it politely. Back when I was kid in the 80s, there were all sorts of controllers that used breath control and even resembled guitars. I would like to see a return in this direction for midi and possibly osc controllers. Enough of the push buttons already!

i guess there are other controllers (from akai for example) which offer that expressivity … just not with them dazzling lights underneath !

Also check out the M-Audio Trigger Finger — it outputs continuous pressure for each of its pads, or so I’m told.

Alright! That is what I’m talking about. With the sophistication of modern computer music software, I think we should have more expressive controllers like this. Thanks for the heads up. I’ll have to check the trigger finger out. I had no idea that it outputs continuous pressure.

The AKAI MPD’s also can do this.

Although I never tried one, the Manta certainly looks like an expressive controller (and truly beautiful imo). I would not mind owning one… http://www.snyderphonics.com/

Wow, the Soundplane looks awesome! It looks like a great
instrument to explore expressiveness. It could be an affordable
alternative to the Continuum Fingerboard.

There’s also the “Handrail”, though it’s a one-of-a-kind instrument and not for sale. Not sure if it used Max though.

following the release day excitement there’s plenty of info available now – it *has* legs outside of ableton live and the variable colour/intensity states are addressable by midi …
something like this (see CDM)

Velocity 0 = Off
Velocity 1 = light red
Velocity 2 = medium red
Velocity 3 = full red
Velocity 16 = light green
Velocity 32 = medium green
Velocity 48 = full green
Velocity 17 = light amber
Velocity 34 = medium amber
Velocity 55 = full amber
Velocity 18 = light orange (Lighter > red / darker > amber)
Velocity 35 = medium orange (Lighter > red / darker > amber)
Velocity 31 = full orange (Lighter > red / darker > amber)

easy to exploit the pad array from max then, so i’m happy.

handy, but it ain’t a monome and it clearly isn’t intended to be

i mean it sounds like that some of the “easy” monome patches are def. possible..

using a counter to bang the leds, and using notein and select to trigger a specific sample position

this would be a monome patch…
