All the really nice 3D simulations I have seen are based on level set methods. The general concept makes sense to me, but I do not really understand where to start with the math. I am trying to find some simple examples from which I can build. Vector calculus is not new to me, but level set methods are.

Ron Fedkiw’s site at Stanford has a lot of neat simulations (along with research papers!) using level set methods:

I am not looking for anywhere near that complexity, just trying to get something that looks decent while being computationally stable/cheap in two dimensions.

Does anyone have any advice? I don’t mind if I have to read a whole book on the subject, I’m just looking for some starting points.
