Hi, am I missing something here, but it doesn't seem to be possible to dynamically set the contents of a live.menu?

Yes, it's not possible. Thats why in all Max devices where the content is dynamic no live.menu is used (eg. the abstractions where you can brows the devices/tracks etc.). It is related to automation because live is not aware of any change made to the menu when automated...
