In my previous life, I had an external that took two inputs and allowed you
to switch between them (or ‘mutate’ – I think it was called something like
‘mutate’). I know there are lots of relatively simple ways to do this, but

right direction for what I’m looking for? After trawling several patch
libraries, I’ve come up with diddley.

It could possibly be lp.tim~, which does time domain mutation.
Little Timmie (as he’s affectionately known around here) is part of the Starter Pack, which is free (the good news) but currently PPC/Windows only (not so good for many people). Litter Pro has a UB implementation of tim~ as well as lp.frim~ (spectral mutation).
I think these objects fit your description of "a little more elaborate…"
