looking for sounds

Hi all,

I recently started to work with sound synthesis, and at this moment I’m
at the point where I can create a subtractive synthesizer in max, but
what if I’m looking for a specific sound? Say an 8-bit like type of
sound, very Blip festival, very old school nintendo. Basically I’m
looking for suggestions on how to deal with creating the sounds I want,
is it better to sample it and the play with it -I guess this is the
easiest path- but what if I want to create it? I understand the question
might be too broad, any recommendations? Any sources?

Thank you.

Cheers,

Leonardo.

One avenue would be to check out the Magical 8bit Plug Audio Unit by YMCK, who played at the Blip Festival actually. :) http://ymck.net
There are plenty of ways to build your own 8bit sounds from scratch but I’ll leave that to those who know MSP. ;)

best,
Dan

If you wanna go the easy way, check out the chiptune externals at

http://www.mmonoplayer.com/mspexternals.php

If you wanna build it yourself, go for lots of arpeggiation(sah~),
simple waveforms (tri~,noise~,rect~,saw~), and use the degrade~ object
to downsample into 8-bit quality sound.
