looking to monitor ambient sound

January 15, 2007 | 9:45 pm

a question to audio ppl
i am looking for a microphone to pick up ambient chatter in its surroundings
a microphone that will pick smalltalk in a radius of 3-5m, what am i looking
for?

its not for recording, just to push some jitter shapes.
thank you.

any mic would do, just get a tiny one, maybe a lapel dynamic mic from radioshack which would be tiny and should work if you crank it up. those are only 20 bux too. of course the best would be a condenser mic, like a sony minidisc microphone, but those are about 90 bux, but will get clear signal from the whole room.

Sounds like a job for a cheap PZM, something like:

Try searching for ‘boundary mic’ – although commonly
referred to as ‘PZM’s', the term is apparently
copyrighted to Crown, thus tends to draw a blank in
searches,
cheers

(PS. In case this later appears as a duplicate, I sent this reply earlier today via e-mail, but as yet that is still lost in cyberspace…)
