I have been using Max for a while now, but am very new to OSC and networking .

I just got an iphone and am using TouchOSC with Max. Because I will be performing live with this setup, I am trying to get it up and working by creating a computer-to-computer network between my Macbook Pro and the iphone. This should supposedly work, but I am not experienced enough with networking situations to figure out why I'm having problems.

I can generally establish a connection for a few minutes, and everything works wonderfully while the connection lasts. Unfortunately, the iphone seems to lose the connection every so often (sometimes a few minutes, sometimes seconds) and requires re-establishing a connection. Sometimes, simply going to the info page of TouchOSC and then going back into the interface fixes the problem. Sometimes, I find that the phone has a completely new ip address out of the blue, and I have to re-enter that into the patch to re-establish the connection.

I am using udpreceive and udpsend on ports 7400 and 7401 respectively, though my novice assumption is that the problem exists not within the patch and Max but rather with my network settings.

I am doing the whole "create network" thing with my Macbook Pro and have tried both doing it automatically and using the provided ip address as well as entering manual ip addresses on both the computer and phone ends.

My advice would be to buy a wireless router. Something like a Linksys WRT54 is cheap (I have three of them, at a rough cost of £20 each), you can set up static IPs (and even local hostnames), and a router should provide a more reliable service than a MacBook acting as a DHCP server.

Doh! I was kind of afraid of that. I actually have an airport express, so bringing a network with me is certainly an option, though for simplicity's sake I was trying to avoid that.

Is it simply a matter of the computer not doing a good enough job of being a router?

It seems like some people are having success with the setup I initially described. Might something else be contributing to my problem?

Strange. Me, I had no problem connecting 2 ipod touch (running TouchOSC, MSA Remote, or Fantastick), both, sending data from my ten fingers, at the same time into max, thru my MBP local network (automatic canal 11, and manual MBP IP).
