Mac OS 10.5 Leopard Support

October 26, 2007 | 3:14 pm

Cycling 74 has not yet finished evaluating Mac OS 10.5, aka Leopard.
As with any new OS, you are advised to tread cautiously if you are
considering updating. We are interested in hearing any and all reports
from users, and at some later date we shall publish full details of
our compatibility. Until that time use of our software on Leopard is unsupported.

If you wish to make reports of your experience with Leopard, please send them to support at cycling74 dot com

October 26, 2007 | 3:25 pm

I have no formal association with Cyclic ’74 so this is an independent
opinion. I NEVER upgrade to a new operating system until someone like
Andrew gives the all-clear. Please do not be impatient with them. They are
facing a very big job getting Max 5 out and making sure it is compatible
with the operating systems that people will eventually be using. Their
support is stellar. None better in the business.

Ive had the opportunity to test Max/MSP and Jitter on the release
candidate of 10.5 on an Intel Macbook.

As far as I could tell, everything worked. Custom Shaders (ahem),
quicktime playback, my iLok loaded, etc. I tested a few MSP objects
and all seemed kosher. Of course, huge grain of salt with this.
Inevitably the one object you want wont work :P

I plan on upgrading ASAP as there are some lovely new features I
really want to play with, so im happy to report back with my
experiences with Max on 10.5.

I bought X.5 today. What is your opinion? Is it safe to upgrad?

I installed 10.5 over 10.4.10 last Saturday and since had no problems
so far, especially with MaxMSP.
However I did not work with Jitter.

All in all I like Leopard, Time Machine is great.

Allow me to be the 3rd to 2nd that,
just installed leopard,
and all seems to work.

I tried
-some general max business
-some jitter video business
-some jitter openGL business
-some fancy jsui business

no troubles.

as for Leopard itself, the main feature i see is that more things have reflections and more windows are transparent.

has anyone had any issues getting soundflower to work under leopard?

November 1, 2007 | 12:55 pm

after asking this list about problems were the answer was non, I installed it on a G5 2.5 MGZ and Max crashes loading!
Mail crashes loading many other apps do not work.
I even had a message at the end of the installation procedure: your Mac could not be upgraded!!! But it launches into X.5….
Ouch
Anyone heared of this before?

November 1, 2007 | 1:26 pm

Sorry Hans, but installing a .0 version of anything, and especially
the OS is asking for trouble. In my 25 years of computer use I’ve
never experienced a .0 that didn’t break something.

Thousands of Leopard users are having problems right now. See
macfixit, macintouch etc.

Actually, one of the c74 crew warned against upgrading on this list.

With Max, it could be that you just need to upgrade the pace copy
protection stuff. Search this forum for info.

Good luck. It might be time to revert to your Tiger backup.

Hi Hans. I would suggest doing an Archive and Install option for 10.5,
and also when booted from the DVD, make sure to verify your harddrive.

Good luck!

hi Hans,

Do you have the APE on your mac? There’s an issue with anything less
than the very latest version that causes problems with X.5.
I had problems installing X.5 on my one remaining G5 – the install
process seemed to freeze on a blue screen (blue screen of death???)
near the end of the install. I eventually did a back up and reinstall
(which is actually what I normally do – I was being lazy), and
finally got it working – though the last part of the process seemed
to take ages.

My experience with Leopard lasted exactly one week. I figured I’d take the fall for everyone on the fence.

While Max seemed stable, the plugins I used were decidedly not. Notably, Izotope plugs (Phatmatik Pro & Vinyl) & NI plugs (Vokator and Kontakt 3) crashed everything.

Logic, one of Apple’s own, was the least stable of all.

Interfaces:
Ultralite: Worked
RME Fireface 400: Worked

And then, I popped SuperDuper open and did my own personal "Time Machine" back to 10/26/07.

I have reinstalled Tiger. I do not recommend to install Leopard on a Power PC based computer. I think on an Intel computer it will be easier to upgrade.

I tried to run a Jitter standalone app on a MacBook Pro with Leopard. It did not work.

Has anyone been able to run a standalone successfully?

Thanks in advance.

My experience so far, is good: MaxMSP/Jitter 4.6.3 is running just fine on a
1.33 Ghz iBook G4, upgraded from 10.4.11 to 10.5.1. Only thing that’s a bit
"funny" is that screen redraws are not so smooth – resizing a bpatcher left
some "debris" on the screen (cleared up when I locked the patch.)

I actually got my app working on Leopard. The problem was in including the Quitcktime files in the build. I did a build w/o the .movs and it works fine. Requires an extra step, but it’s OK for now I guess.

November 26, 2007 | 9:23 am

I am recently using my patch for multi speaker sound distribution,
where i route sound from Ableton Live trough Soundflower to MSP.

On tiger worked fine, but since upgrade to leopard i encountered a strange problem with DSP. I am getting cracking distorted output, similar to CPU overload. When I switch on/off the DSP it works fine for few minutes, than starts again. Very annoying during performance a continues switching on/off the DSP.

I updated the OS to 10.5.1 but the same thing happens.

Did anybody had the same?

I get this "debris" once in a while on 10.4.11 with 4.6.3. It’s not much, but the same solution fixes it for me.

November 27, 2007 | 11:24 pm

Midi update
MOTU Fastlane now works with the new drivers
As for Konnekt 24D – from TC support:
Go to: ../Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers/
Find the file called: "TCNear.bundle"
Rename this file to: "TCNear.plugin"
Reboot
The Finder wouldn’t let me do this, I had to do the sudo mv thing in Terminal
All good now :-)

the same happens here,
over and over again.

a buffer problem or timer mismatch. making soundflower useless.

have been looking inside the open-sourced code, but couldn’t see any
direct problems. then again, i’m not a c++ writer
the Apple AudioReflectorDriver is a bit more up to date and could be
used to rewrite the soundflower code.
that might solve the problem.

but this would make soundflowebed menu useless.

dear cycling74, is it possible to open-source the soundflowerbed code?
for santa…

is any update in progess ?

makes things possibly faster / easier

Thank you.

I’m running Leopard and have the same problem, after using soundflower once. Mine’s so bad that audio simply halts sometimes. Sometimes the playhead (in logic, quicklook, itunes, etc) will be moving, with no audio.. Other times the play head will choke and stop. Especially during application switching… like it’s running out of "audio ram" or something. Nothing else seems to be choking however.

The kicker is that this continues to happen after I’ve uninstalled Soundflower, after rebooting, after resetting parameter ram a number of times.

Anyone have a solution that doesn’t involve installing more software?

Thanks

Hi list,

I can’t get jit.uldl to work on OSX, I first tried to run a

bogus object. When installing Max/MSP and Jitter I get the same
results. Anyone has the same experience ?

I can confirm this on OS10.5.1 + Max4.6.3. The object failed to instantiate,
without printed errors. Since Leopard is not officially supported I doubt it
will be fixed soon.

I’m pleased to announce the release of an update to the Mac 4.6.x/
1.6.x (Mach-O) version of jit.uldl, to address incompatibility with
Mac OSX 10.5.x and improve overall reliability. The object can be
used under both 10.4.x and 10.5.x systems, and is a recommended
update for all Jitter users.

jit.uldl for Macintosh (Jitter v. 1.6.x) can be found here:

Enjoy it -

Hi
I see Max/Msp v4.6.3 is not supported with Leopard but I plan to get a brand new macbook and Max/Msp anyway. Having never used max before I figured by the time I learn some Max/Msp basics v5 will be out with (I hope) full Leopard support. It would be great if it works "just enough" in Leopard to get me started. I don’t mind if it crashes a bit while I’m learning.

Any more reports about stability with new macbooks, Leopard and Max/Msp v4.6.3?
Thanks

I got constant crashes with Max under 10.5.1

If i delete an object, Max will crash. If I change the name of an object, Max will crash.

It worked before and I haven’t installed that many abstractions. It went from bad up until now where the application has become totally unusable.
Any suggestions? I can post or mail the crash report if needed.

Which object(s) make(s) Max crash?

ej

January 6, 2008 | 3:58 pm

Some objects do it. Its 100% reproducible with xrecord~, play~ and a few other objects that take a few arguments like buffer~.

Deleting objects is not the only thing that makes Max crash. Just closing patchers (any, even help files) will also cause max to crash.

Personally I think all went to hell after installing Percolate, but i already removed the whole lib to troubleshoot. Still getting the crashes.

Try removing any extra third party, and add them "one by one".

Unless you have a version of xsample which I don’t have, you are
trying to load CFM plugins on an Intel machine — which shouldn’t
crash, but won’t work (on my machine, I get a friendly error). I got
mine from http://www.parasitaere-kapazitaeten.net/~thomas/ext/

I got mine from http://grrrr.org/ext/beta/max/osx

But the link seems to be down at the moment.
Its a link posted by Thomas. This is the UB version.
Thats the one I’m using unless I somehow swapped the newer for the old version. But I don’t think so. Will check that out.

OK, I got the version from that link and can confirm that suddenly Max
is crashy. Until there’s a stable version for UB/Leopard Mac, stay
away, I guess. Max itself is, for me, rock solid on 10.5.1.

I am less worried about max than hardware drivers for MOTU audio and midi
devices and third party objects. Is anyone keeping a list of things that
work and don’t?

They’re aliases of xsample. Put that init file in the init folder and
restart Max, or send the messages to max which are in the file before
opening the help file.

I contacted Thomas about this and I guess he’s looking into it.
The version Jeremy used was just uploaded on the 5th. So the bug is confirmed with a newer version of the object. I also still get the same crash after installing the new version.

Without this object, max seems to perform fine.

Max works just fine for me (so far) with10.5.1

The xsample issue seems to be resolved.

The latest update of this object is available at http://grrrr.org/ext/beta/

No other problems in Leopard to report so far.

hello there, you good people

February 3, 2008 | 10:21 pm

I took the plunge this weekend and upgraded to Leopard. I am happy to say everything I use is working fine. I’ve tried a bunch of my Max/MSP/Jitter patches with no problems. My Java externals work fine. Note that I am not using any 3rd party externals yet, and it sounds like most people’s problems are caused by various externals.

Max and Logic Pro 8 are still playing nice together (as nice as can be expected – I assume there are still timing problems with IAC bus + ReWire). Pluggo plug-ins are running in Logic.

I was most concerned about hardware drivers. I am using the following devices with no problems:
* Monome 40h
* Evolution UC-33e
* M-Audio Oxygen 8
* M-Audio Uno
* Line6 PODxt

So I am in really good shape here on Leopard. Now if only I could get my hands on Max 5 I would be in heaven :)

Same here. I was forced into a Leopard upgrade since a colleague of
mine is doing a lot of quite tense OpenGL stuff, and Leopard has
influenced that. (Oh, and let’s not start on Java 6…) Leopard seems
neater and faster than Tiger, and I like the styling. (But I also like
"cover flow", so I must be easily amused.)

Well, the Mark/Space utils for my Treo threw their toys out of the
pram the first time I tried a sync, but it all seems happy now. Xcode
3 seems to compile MaxMSP externals cleanly. (Perhaps I should
actually try to load them?)

Originally, I was also happy with the plunge, but as time passes, I’m
noticing more and more problems which makes me a bit more hesitant to
recommend the upgrade. I will compile a list of Leopard-related error
messages and malfunctions shortly.

Would be good to compare notes.

The main niggle I’m seeing is with the (new, completely redesigned)
firewall. Every now and then it’ll ask me if I want to allow network
communications for a newly launched application. Even if I say yes, a
day or two later, it’ll ask me again.

hi,

did anyone ever try to compile soundflower kernel extension on 10.5 ?

the soundflowerbed extenson gives no problems but the extension gives
problems when compiled from the 1.2.1 source or even from the
unofficial 1.3 source that has also been distributed via the Rogue
Amoeba Audio Hijack application.

in both cases, it becomes imposible to select a Hz via Audio Midi Setup.

both times, it will look fine untill you click on it to change it. the
default values will be 44.100,2 / 48.000,2 / 96.000,2 …
making it impossibile to make soundflower work once you select one of
these. no audio will be available. so you are stuck with the standard
44.100,00.

I don’t know enough of c to be of any help here, but I hope the
cycling crew can take a look.

thank you,

Jan

this happens on every flavour of 10.5, even on 10.5.2c30 ( which does
remember firewall settings, Nick )

I updated to 10.5.2 today and no major problems so far.

Now that I spent more time with Leopard, one problem I’ve run into is with the X11 support. I was really happy to see that Leopard installs with X11 by default, but it has some issues. I normally use GIMP for my image processing needs and for making screenshots, but it’s "acquire screenshot" feature now always gives an all black image. It worked fine in Tiger. Oh well, now I use Apple’s Grab utility.

mb pro 2.4, 10.5.2, no problems (so far)

as for x11/gimp: there is an ssue with apples x11 and a patch needs to
be applied. do you know about:

Yeah, that was one of the first things I tried. Doesn’t fix the acquire screenshot issue but otherwise GIMP seems ok.

happy ending:
it turns out Default Folder was the culprit (probably also for the original blue screen of death issues as well since it uses application enhancer)

Just a quick question – wondered if there was any progress on whether it will be supported – or more to the point, will it ever? I (sadly) need to purchase a new computer soon, and obviously any apple i get will come with leopard. I understand that Max 5 will be compatible but until I know the upgrade price, this may be out of my price range (and i may just feel like sticking with 4)

Can we expect Leopard to be supported at all, or is it likely we’ll be faced with no other choice than to move to 5. Understand a number of users have reported no problems, but the fact that some may still exist…

Many thanks

Ok, that’s awesome. I don’t even use jitter so I assume the jit.uldl isn’t required? Or do I assume wrong?

(I’ve been jittering with 1.6.3 under Leopard and all seems happy so

It’s 1.6.3 with some fixes very specific stability issues with asyncread and spigot~ and a couple of other sundry nuggets. It’s neither significant nor tested enough to get a new version number, although for those users who need those features to work, it’s a big improvement and just as stable, if not more, than 1.6.3.

Again, the notes:
- jit.qt.movie no longer stops drawing in direct-to-window mode, if the window is moved or resized.
- @unique not longer interferes with @loopreport on Windows.
- Windows fix for reading movies from Collectives.
- Fixed a spigot~ error (-2184 setting AudioChannelLayout for SOC).
- Fixed numerous stability problems associated with the "asyncread" method of jit.qt.movie.

The patch does some jitter processing with delaying live video and record an play of quicktime files.

Any ideas?

I’ve been working with Mac OS 10.5 for about 3 month without any problem using Max/Msp/Jitter. And I have presented two shows during this period and everything works fine.

Hi,
I’m experiencing freezes and crashes with some granular modules I made (which use metro objects intensively).
I’m under 10.5.2, MacBookPro 2.4, 2G ram.
I began to see strange things like metro objects stopping when overdrive and audio interrupt options on, that I managed to avoid by setting the scheduler in audio interrupt to off.
I made new versions (grooveduck style granular stuff) of my modules but now they’re more cpu consuming and don’t sound as precise as before. And setting the scheduler in audio interrupt back to on while using these modules will just make Max crash !
Any similar experiences ? (please, I think I’m going crazy, this used to work perfectly on my good old G4 powerbook).
I’ll try to downgrade to Tiger which was installed on my MacBookPro when I got it and give you some news …
Thanks,
Joseph

It’s more than likely your problems don’t have anything to do with the Mac OS you are using.

You’ll need to isolate exactly what’s going on.

As for Leopard 10.5.2 + Max/MSP 4.6.3, our self developed externals work but each time I close a patcher window Max "quits unexpectedly".

Moreover, I tested a very computational expensive external: while on my first generation Intel MacBook Pro (2,16 GHz, Core Duo) I get 40-44% cpu load, with the new MacBook Pro (2,4 GHz, Core 2 Duo Penryn) I get 48-52%

Indeed there’s something wrong!

Hallo,
I’m having a similar problem of no DSP output,
with MaxMsp 4.6.3 and Leopard 10.5.6
on a white macbook nvidia 2009.

The first time that DSP is switched on, it works as it should.
But then, if it’s switched off and then back on,
using easydac or everything else:
- the Audio menu in the DSP Status window remains in the off position
- no sound is put out.
And even if I just delete an audio cable,
the DSP shuts off and there’s no way to turn it on again.

Weird weird thing…
The only solution for the moment is to restart MaxMsp,
not very practical, though.

——————
Things I’ve tried:

I removed all the non-legacy externals, nothing changed.

I had the last version of soundflower installed, I uninstalled it but things haven’t changed…

I tried with a firewire motu 828mkII instead of the integrated audio, nothing changes…

I sweared to god multiple times, you know often it works, but not this time…

I traveled to the future and followed the advice of trashing the preferences folder
given in the next message, but it didn’t help…
——————

This is driving me mad, next week I have reharsals with a theather company
and this issue is going to add stress…
sure I can make the patch perfect and take care of not opening or closing any window containing audio objects,
but I hope there’s a better solution.

I have max5 demo installed on the same system and tried to replicate the shiz,
but it’s not affected by this problem. So it’s really a 4.6-on-leopard issue.
I can’t install beloved and stable 10.4 on this macbook,
as it’s unsupported and would run into driver problems.

I know 4.6 is officially unsupported on Leopard,
but I hope cyclying74 understands the situation of people like me,
that, after buying a new Leopardized-nowayback computer,
wish to keep using 4.6 as a trusted and stable tool.

If anyone can help me out of this situation i’d be really grateful,
thanks and have bright days,
kk

Try deleting the "max 4.x preferences folder" and see if that helps. It’s a good thing to do if you are ever having problems with max that you can’t seem to fix.

While looking at the forum posts I found this one:

http://www.cycling74.com/forums/index.php?t=msg&goto=148609&rid=0&srch=preferences+folder#msg_148609

It says that this thing happens when your application is in demo mode.
But mine is not a demo, it’s registered and worked flawlessly till last week.
And I’ve not changed any hardware component.
Though, if I run the same patch in the Runtime environment,
I can switch on and off the DSP and it works without problems!

Could it be that the Max5 demo that’s expiring in 4 days
is disturbing the authorized Max4 version?

Any suggestion is welcome,
thanks,
kk

Update:

I wrote to the exquisite cycling74 support,
they supposed my copy got unauthorized
and that authorizing it again would have solved the issue…
and infact re-authorizing it has solved the shizz!
So no Leopard 10.5.6 issues here with MaxMsp 4.6.3/ Jitter 1.6.3,
it works without any problem!
Bless,
kk
