MacBook Pro built-in audio outputs and soundcard options

hi everyone,

i’m considering getting one of the current “core 2 duo” macbook pro
computers, most likely the 2.33ghz 15″ one.
currently i’m using a g4 titanium powerbook with a digigram pcmcia
vxpocket as my soundcard for live and mobile work. i have a
digidesign digi002 interface too, but this is much too large to
travel with.

since the macbook pro doesn’t have a pcmcia slot any longer, can
someone recommend another very portable solution for my sound input/
output?

the built-in sound output on my titanium g4 has always been terribly
noisy. how are these combined optical digital/analogue outputs on the
macbook pro’s?

how have people’s general experiences with these latest apple
portables been?

thanks very much for any advice!

Presonus Firebox is good if you don’t need a load of ins. The
Focusrite Saffire looks nice too (2 analogue, 2 digital ins). I’m
getting a Saffire pro as a replacement for my RME Multiface.

The analogue jack out is horrible, especially if you have external
drives – really nasty noise as they wind up. The digital out is fine
though. I’m currently running it into an old Finaliser to convert to
analogue.
