Magnetized multislider — similar to EQ interfaces

A student of mine asked whether it would be possible to make something like this, similar to that found in the Windows Media Player EQ and others. So I thought about it while eating some Chinese buffet, figured out some math-y ways to do it (hypothetically anyways), but then realized the filtergraph~ kind of does this already.

So instead of a feature request for Multislider: “magnetism 0.5″, “magnetism effect range 5″ etc. (which still might be cool), I put together this example patch using filtergraph to control the multisliders in this “magnetized” kind of way. I think it’ll be pretty useful in some situations, not just for EQ (since that’s sort of what filtergraph does already….)

Interested to see what people think of this usage. Of course going to the multislider isn’t strictly necessary, but setting the size and the range of it will sample and scale the filtergraph’s output to something that’s (potentially) more immediately usable for the job at hand (like if you have 8 oscillators, or 32, and want to set their volumes, frequencies, phases, whatever). I keep the Hertz range of the filtergraph at 1000, then resample to the number of sliders and scale the values. So the filtergraph isn’t used for audio at all, but as an interface object… like how you can use waveform~ as a much-improved Range Bar.

I remember this multislider patch I saw about five or six years ago
where each multislider was controlling an oscillator, and they were
connected by some sort of weighted spring deal.

You would move one and then all the rest would move to meet it…

I searched my archive for a good while but couldn’t come up with it,
does anyone else remember that patch?

Yes, that was a patch by jhno called Cellsound.

The patch is based around cellular automata. No springs are involved.
In certain cases the CA does behave like a spring, though.

If you have Pluggo, there is an object called ca1d.mxo in the Library/
Application Support/C74 Plug-in Support/Pluggo Support/bonus-externs
folder. Just swap the ca1d object for the ca1s and the cellsound patch
works. And the source code is in the cellsound download.

Hey, sorry to revive this after so long but I saved this patch to my hard-drive a while ago and for no good reason started tinkering around with it today. I added a small section that allows you to set the Q value using a number box (not the mouse) and when you drag the filter shape around the slope maintains its shape independent of the frequency.
