mailing list

January 17, 2007 | 7:04 pm

Hello,

I am on the max/msp mailing list and will be gone on a trip soon. I
have been trying to login to the forum website, in order to have
e-mails from the list witheld for a couple of weeks. However, on the
website it says that my e-mail address was not found on the database.
Is there a way for you to confirm that yes, this address is in the
database (veometta@umich.edu) and to have a password re-set for it? I
don’t want to be off the mailing list, I just don’t want e-mails for
the next two weeks.

Thanks,
Angela Veomett

As far as our records are concerned, your email address,
veometta@umich.edu, is found both in the forum database and the mailman
database, so perhaps you’re mistyping it.

The easiest way to unsubscribe from the list (in my opinion) is to use
the email commands. Just send an email to
maxmsp-unsubscribe@cycling74.com and follow the instructions in the reply.

Also, in the future, if you have mailing list questions, please send
them to maxmsp-owner@cycling74.com.

cheers

That way you might get a lot of new spams even if its not from cycling,
as the bots will find your adress on the openely available Forum
pages… ;-)

Email addresses are only displayed where the user has their alias — the
way they choose to be identified — set to their email address. Email
addresses are not explicitly displayed. Approximately 13% of accounts
have this issue.

While this is an issue the user has control over, I’ve long considered
running scripts on the table such that it would change their aliases,
but modifying user accounts without permission is not something we’re
usually inclined to do.

If a user has their account created in the forum by posting to the
mailing list, the part after the @ sign is stripped off.

It says clearly on the registration page that "If you want a nickname
other than your login to be displayed in the forum, enter it here."
Since the login is the email address, we assume most users would know to
enter something here. Given that some don’t, maybe we should spell it
out for them a little more clearly.

Therefore, to characterize the forum as "openly available" is
inaccurate. The forum is not open in the manner you imply. Of course, if
someone includes someone’s email address in a post, like say when
replying to a post or as part of their signature, then that email
address will appear in the forums. Unfortunately, there’s only so much
we can do to strip email addresses that members enter in as part of
their posts.

Ironically enough, posts that go out to the mailing list are more likely
to get your name on a spammer’s list than simply having a forum
account. This is because anyone can subscribe to a public list and
harvest emails. We’re working on a solution to obfuscate the addresses
in the posts sent to the list from the forum, but I’m not aware of any
mailman modification that would allow us to do the same for mailing list
subscribers. Of course, one would assume that most folks that sign up to
a public mailing list are aware of the risks of participating in a list
as such.

Long story short: the forum doesn’t intentionally leak email addresses,
although it’s S.O.P. for the mailing list side of things, and it’s a
problem with no apparent all-encompassing solution but one that we’re
concerned with.

Hope this clarifies things.

I was clearly reffering to the adrres he put into the mail body, I
checked, it was not filtered, which nobody would expect by the way…
The forum is setup correct

Thats what I was pointing to in this case…

please do not globally replace @ with " at "or something likle that,
because it would break posted jitter patches… (One could test for @
embedded into words wich have a point after the @ though…)

A re-read of your post does indeed lend itself to that interpretation,
Stefan. My apologies.

The larger points about spam harvesting still stand though :-)

Wow. If only I could be a bit clearer. Apologies. I am very very out
of it this morning.

Translation: Is anyone else receiving duplicates via email of the list?
