many layers of soundfiles

September 25, 2008 | 8:56 am

Hello,
I’m trying to do some work with many layers of soundfiles -that means, many instances of sfplay~s- and I see that max stops reading by around 25 layers. Is this a "natural" limit of the system or is there a work-around to allow the reading of more layers (more soundfiles)? The files are stereo-files of around 1 minute each one; for it, I would discard to load them as buffers in ram…
Thanks in advance,
Alberto Bernal

Two ways to deal with the problem. 25 Files is already something, so it
might be that your system (HD etc.) is bit too slow.

First thing to try is to increase the buffersize of sfplay~ (there is a
"more features" subpatcher in the help file to explain)

Second, if each file is only 1 min, this would account to about 500 MB
of ram (in ram you have to account for 32-bits) On a reasonable computer
you should have this amount of free ram, to play all with buffer~s.
