marginal request

I have a tiny request.
Right now, when using max, I feel that its discouraged to make
patches which are larger than the screen (or window). right now the
scroll bars end exactly where your last object is, it takes some
effort to move an object beyond the edge of a window. and of
course effort sucks.

thats really it… um. some suggested solutions might be,
a preference for margins beyond the last object in a window. (like
300 pixels.)
zoom key combos
hand tool combos (java script able-ish)

just a thought…

Some standard behaviors from the 90s would be nice, too, like auto-
scrolling when an object hits a window boundary (including extending
the canvas size as necessary). This would probably be more flexible
than having to change a preference for a fixed added margin.
Similarly, a few weeks back there was talk of magnification (“zoom”
in Windowsspeak).

It’s true that you can drop items outside the window margins, (Matt,
have you tried dragging an object till the mouse is outside your
window and then letting go of the mouse button? It’s a cute effect.)
But everyone else I know autoscrolls.

Some aspects of Max’ UI still look sort of System 6.0.5-like. I
appreciate that increasing core functionality has been were most of
the action is (MSP, scripting, Java & JScript, Jitter…), and I
appreciate the UI enhancements that have seen the light of day.
Still, it would be cool to have some of the features that we take for
granted with other apps…

FWIW, the next major release of MaxMSP will feature a new graphics
API with anitaliasing, and true alpha channel compositing for a more
modern look/feel.

yes I have. I was describing more of a subconscious effect. like
yes there’s a method, but there’s also a mental block.

as for the sys6 UI, I’ve come to love it on the back end. and I
understand the issue of cross platform backwards compatibility. but
I think when I lock my patcher I should be able to get things like
antialiased characters, shadows, embossing, panes etc…

alpha blending will be a major step.

BUT NOT AQUA… DOWN WITH AQUA…. SOMETHING ORIGINAL whew

a typo, which is a bit like a spelling mistake, I came up with this

Given that Joshua writes with Mail.app (according to his mail
headers), he’s probably turned spellchecking off.

But one request definitely will follow out of my experience with typos:

Please, please….!!!!
If I have a connected patcher, and retype a different external name wich
doesn’t exist, it will cut all connections! and there is no working undo!!!
Solution: if a typed in name doesn’t match, put in a bogus object which
at least retains all connections.

Is that too much to ask?
I guess everybody from Cycling will fall into that trap as well regularily.

Having been through the miserable shit-storm that is
ME/CFS over the last 3 years, and consequently having
frequently been possessed with a bizarre kind of
dyslexia/typographica, anything that could save us
from this kind of thing would make me very happy,

I’d prefer the box to turn red and leave the cursor in place so I can
quickly correct the mistake without even reclicking.

I hear David Z’s question from here: why would you like to write a
bad object name in a box? :-)
