match colour algorithm

Long shot

I am looking for some information on the “match color” algorithm in
Photoshop CS.

Apparently its not quite a straight forward colour mapping technique.

Has anybody found info on anything like this? Im trying to make some
software for students to do something similar

It started as a website for a program called MSP

In 1997, the original website was designed by Cat’s Eye Press to use the Brush Script font, images from a 1974 Schwinn bicycle catalog, and a pastel-to-Howard Johnson color palette. And then things got out of hand.
