Have not actually posted something in a while. But today i have the fever.

Ok, to start off with. I am getting more and more into max and that, although, not having a MBP does make me feel like i go to work every time i go on Max. But will be getting one very soon after the move to Amsterdam, which is coming earlier than excepted, which is actually great, because i hate Dubai so so much, etc etc etc.

At this moment in time before getting my MBP, the move to the 'Dam and also feeling more comfortable with Max/MSP/Jitter, i am now trying to get back into Math.

But in all honesty, i was never really into math as a child. But now since the rise and discovery of Max, have found this deep urge to learn much more, in the path for better learning and manipulation of Max/MSP/Jitter.

I notice that at the end of the Jitter tutorials that there is the Bibliography page, which is actually great, and is extremely helpful in DIP (Digital Image Processing). 

From starting on Jitter as well, the tutorials have become really easy, or is that just me.

But my question (after this other banter) is, is there any good information to understand the maths side of Max more. This may seem like a completely stupid question, but since Jitter has the Bibliography page, filled with useful and free information on DIP and Matrices.

I completely suck at math, although do know the basic side, but would like to have to info that can help in some way or the other. Such as Algorithm and such things.

I know you don't need to use Max/MSP with a great knowledge of math, but knowing some is always good, plus it can make you seem smarter than you are ;)

Any info, or the such like what the Jitter bibliography gives you would be great.

I have the same problem and I usually turn to wikipedia to read just 

enough math to get over the hurdle I encounter...

but if you go to a good university bookstore, they should be able to 

help you find some good books on math for non-beginners...

I can reccomend a couple of titles that may be in the right ballpark:

'Mathematics, A Human Endeavor, 3rd ed.' by Harold R. Jacobs, Freeman and Co. 1994

'For All Practical Purposes; Mathematical Literacy in Today's World, 7th ed.' by COMAP, Freeman and Co. 2006

For the more mathematically inclined wanting more musically-centered math:

'Musimathics, Vol. 1 & 2' by Gareth Loy, MIT Press 2006 & 2007

I have looked at the Musimathics before and have been very interested by them. I will take the plunge and buy them, once i have finished moving.

Also, took a look at the one stringtapper put up for me 'Mathematics for the Nonmathematician'.

This sounded quite interesting. Also read up on it and it is a simple straight forward book. And for only 10 pounds, that is a steal.

Also it was nice to read that it was recommended as well by a Max course, so that does help.

I can double up on the Musimathics recommendation, I used the first 20 pages in building the subtractive synth I am working on in maxmsp as a learning tool. Very well written and informative.

This is a great thread! I have also been trying to elevate myself from math-know-nothing to math-know-at-least-a-little-bit status. Musimathics is highly recommended, also, although it's not geared towards sound and music, I found Danny Kodicek's book helpful. And as a general interest read I found Andrew Hodges' "One to Nine" very inspiring.

 I worked through this book when I decided to take a Berkeley extension course on DSP a couple years back, when I had been out of college for 13 years. Great book that actually makes Calc seem simple, I wish I had known about it during high school/college.

I have ordered the Mathematics for Non-mathematicians.

Was cheap as well. Surprisingly they could get it in. Dubai is odd for not letting things in sometimes.

Going to get the Musimatics soon as well. But this one can be for a 'for the time being' book.
