Max 4.5/AUVI & new MacBook Pro

Hallo all,

I’m looking to replace my G4 Powerbook with a new MacBook Pro, take advantage of that dual Intel brain matter. I use Jitter and the external AUVI objects a lot, and want to make sure I still can. AUVI creator Kurt Ralske has verified that AUVI will work with Intel as long as it’s run off of Max 4.5.

My question is: will Max 4.5 run on the new MacBook Pro? I’m thinking there’s no reason it shouldn’t, but I’d hate to make this investment and then find out otherwise…

thanks in advance…

Max 4.5 is officially unsupported on MacTel. It might work though, but
don’t complain if it does not, it’s not really supposed to work.

Also, apple might announce new laptops June 6th, so hold on tight.

Oh You spoke with him?
Ask him for either an update to his fucking software or my 200
bucks back.

If max 4.5 will run on Mactel, it will be in Rosetta emulation. Not much
of speed gain to expect….

There’s a Yahoo Group mailing list set up for AUVI users…. you can ask him questions, etc. He has stated there that, due to raising his daughter and other work duties, he doesn’t have time to work on AUVI for the foreseeable future.

Well frankly that is just bullshit.

I do not reveal my “busy schedule” to people in lieu of fulfilling
obligations.

The guy should release his code or pull his page down, offer an
apology and let us get on.

I find this extremely irritating.

While I agree with some of what your saying, I think the way your saying it is a damn good way to turn him off to updating it entirely. I think asking in a negative light puts an air of distain over the project.

I cant tell you how much I love these objects and want to see them updated. I just wish there was a course of action to get that done. I only got to use them for like a year after buying and now I no longer have a ppc machine to use them on. this has saddened me as they were the primary video objects that I used, and far exceeded the visual qualities of the built in jitter objects in terms of smoothness and speed, as well as usability. I stated in the jitter side of the forum that I think C74 should license them and make them part of the main jitter distro, I honestly think this would be the best course of action, seeing as jitter 2 seems like the next logical step for c74 work efforts and I hope that is even a shadow as wonderful an update as max 5 is.

Id love for andrew b. or someone in the jitter crew to chime in and let me know if that is even a slight possibility,

#131033

if he outsourced the code, id be more than willing to port some of the time invariant effects to shaders (those are easy candidates for GPU-ing). Alas…

I would love to be more polite about it but i have to take my cat
to the vet today and then pick up dry cleaning. Seriously, the
issue is this guy, no matter what gallery he has showed work in or
what type of previous reputation he commands, has basically said
“tough shit, i am too busy” after collecting dough from folks.
Unacceptable.

It’s been over a year with absolutely nothing from the guy, and i
am not joining a yahoo group to ask,beg or whatever to a guy who
refuses to make good for whatever reason on his obligation to the
folks who bought the software. We’re really past polite.

This is certainly the LAMEST behavior related to a MAX/MSP/JITTER
thing i have experienced. It reflects badly on this community of
folks.

Eh, I dont remember when I purchased AUVI that stated he agreed to update the objects indefinitely, for different Operating systems, processor architectures and Max API revisions/new versions. It works on OS 9 systems, it works NOW on OS 9 systems with older versions of Max. Go freaking use it!

Tough fucking shit, is what I would say to you, to be perfectly frank. No where does it say, anywhere, that he would be updating his software for unforeseen ABI changes, architecture changes (all of the heavy optimizing done for G4/G5/Alitvec instructions) to port to SSE, and maintain compatibility. These are the risks you take when purchasing software. I could point you to thousands of cases of developers doing just this, who develop for a much larger audience than us.

Its a lot of work, and it does not pay incredibly well, Kurt has stated this. Its a loose loose for him.

So, suck it. Go write some shaders or effects yourself!
Yes it would be nice to have them, but understand just how much work it really is…

If you really want to use AUVI, GO USE IT!!!!

And on another note, quite a lot of AUVI is Kurts specific aesthetic, ideas and imagery that is very close to his heart. Its a very difficult thing to even release these sorts of tools, because so much of yourself is bound up in them. I certainly know that feeling. Anyway, ive got to go do some chores now ;), I cant be bothered to finish this post *wink*

Oh Yes, a Caveat Emptor/Empty.

I never said anything about indefinitely. Once would have been
nice, though.
I pay for upgrades and purchase software for stuff i am too busy
to write myself, bub. I have two cats that just keep me so busy,
and with all this laundry piling up waiting day in and day out for
my beloved AUVI plugins to be updated…

You as well may “suck it” or as i lovingly like to say “Eat a full
bag of shit”

But, your explanation is really hitting home, how pretentious of
me to expect someone to have integrity these days.

I call bullshit.

#1, he collected money from folks because he had a completed working product at that time. Its not like you gave him money for something thats was not finished. You’re bitching that it is not working NOW, on OS X, with Max 5. Do you see how retarded that is? You paid for a product, and got it, and IT WORKS NOW. GO FUCKING USE IT if you are dependent on it.

#2, he has updated AUVI with some bug fixes during its lifetime, so its not as though it was abandoned 2 minutes after its release. But regardless, bitching and moaning isnt going to do a fucking thing. I’ll take your “bag of shit” and raise you “kiss my dick”.

#1 I am not dependent upon AUVI you pompous douchebag. I inquired
politely for a year without a peep or a reply mail, extremely
unprofessional.

#2 My complaints will serve to warn other folks not to get burned,
so you are incorrect.

#3 I have anywhere from 200-400 students, faculty and professional
associates a year to whom i make software purchase recommendations
and as i said before this is the worst behavior i have seen.

And are you now the official spokesman for AUVI, vade? Or just
defending the slacker bullshit NY artist contingent that is ‘too
busy’ to be professional and civil?

I have received quite a few emails now thanking me for speaking
out. i will not share these but i want you to know that i am not
alone in this opinion.

“And are you now the official spokesman for AUVI, vade? Or just
defending the slacker bullshit NY artist contingent that is ‘too

Look, I speak for no one but myself. Im also an AUVI user, and a customer, but its pretty apparent we simply have different expectations. If you dont like it, fine, but to continuously bitch and moan about it is annoying and accomplishing nothing. Other folks have offered have offered to pay for an upgrade, and whatever happens happens. While im no spokesman, I know Kurt and have asked him about this in person, and pleaded with him to release the source, and he gave me valid reasons why he is doing what he is doing. Ive informed him as well of that thread and the offers therein. But its his product, his life, his code and his aesthetic. Deal. And as far as civility, im not the one slinging shit around here. You’re the one who wants his $200 fucking bucks back for software that works as advertised. All I can do is act incredulous, I dont think im the one being unreasonable here, although I do admit to being troll baited…. but I secretly enjoy throwing expletives about on the net.

“#3 I have anywhere from 200-400 students, faculty and professional associates a year to whom i make software purchase recommendations and as i said before this is the worst behavior i have seen.”

Congratulations. You are entitled to your opinion, but you must live in a hole if thats the worst behaviour you have seen, and that it illicits such a response. Do you seriously want a refund? .. I simply do not understand where you get your expectations from…

“#2 My complaints will serve to warn other folks not to get burned, so you are incorrect.”

As far as I am aware, Kurt is not selling AUVI anymore. So, who is there to be burned? Perhaps if he had other products out…. im not sure what your point is. If you are unhappy you are not getting an upgrade for free, I really think thats pushing expectations a bit much, especially considering HOW MUCH THE LANDSCAPE HAS CHANGED since AUVI was released.

“#1 I am not dependent upon AUVI you pompous douchebag. I inquired politely for a year without a peep or a reply mail, extremely unprofessional.”

i apologize. I am not mad at you, vade. i actually think you are a
helpful member of this forum and as i recall you helped me a bit
with umenu years ago. We obviously do not agree nor hold the same
expectations. You are obviously a much more advanced coder than i
shall ever be in regards to Jitter and QC, i do not have the time
to try to emulate the auvi objects. But if you cannot or refuse to
see that this is an issue of principle & integrity that’s up to
you.

And I do not live in a hole, it’s actually a swamp thanks.
