It’s always been my belief that the C74 team is tiny, massively
dedicated (massively parallel?), and never goes to bed. And they
programme in a fine wine and scotch induced haze, along with gourmet
dishes they prepare in their own kitchenettes next to their computers.

And they never get grumpy!

Of course, I could be wrong about some of that.

You wouldnt happen to know of those released details would you?
Should we be expecting an update on C74s site now that the ‘cat’ is
out of the proverbial bag, or will we have to resort to begging and
pleading and acting quite uncivilized?

You mean, if I know what they showed at NIME? I wasn’t there,
choosing instead to deploy Max-based sound weaponry against the
forces of globalization at Heiligendamm. I guess they showed what we
have at this point. You should ask Tim or Ben if you really need to
know, since they were there.

Okay, I confess to being there. But I didn’t take anything like
careful notes, or even see all of the demos. So consider this a
random and tiny and possibly error-ridden subset of the many new
features.

Max 5 looks great. New antialiased, resolution-independent
interface, new cross-platform compositing technology in the patcher.
I think they did a great job keeping it simple, actually using the
redesign to improve the readability of patches and not adding eye candy.
New distinction between “hot” and “cold” inlets. This will help
people learn Max and see at a glance which inlets generate output.
You can maintain multiple viewing modes for your patch, for
development and performance for example. I think that hiding,
resizing and repositioning objects are allowed between different
modes. Like show and hide on lock but very generalized, so I imagine
it supersedes that feature.
Many many improvements to patching interface like object name
autocomplete, auto clean, auto connect solutions.
Better working and better looking debug (tracing) support.
A super cool and general purpose replacement for timeline– think
Time Machine.
A cross platform media browser window which looked like it could be
the start of Max as Finder.

That’s really all I can remember. Hope it helps.

The software is not done yet. The presentation was a work-in-progress
demonstration of a few new features (principally user experience
features) and the new UI. To the best of my knowledge, there will be
no official details until we’re done writing the software to be
detailed. Sorry, I know that sucks, but that’s just how it is until
we’re closer to release.

MaxMSP v 5.0 will support the Mac OS X
“aqua” interface across all objetcs and
the boxed version will include a bicyle.

the price for the update will be around
600-700 USD, and the copy protection will
require to stay connecteed to the internet
when you use the program.

MaxMSP v 5.0 for Mac OS 9 will be available
in october 2008 with the OS X version to follow
soon.
a windows version is currently not planned.

MaxMSP v 5.0 will be exclusively distributed
by NN at http://www.maxmemfuck55.org

hey,

I was at NIME too…
(sorry, didn’t take any photos…)

one important thing you didn’t talked about, Randy, is the new poly~
feature. (its’t probably the only msp object that will change in max 5)
–> new parallel mode = multiprocessor support ! (if understood well,
poly~ will be the only way to split msp thread between several
processors / cores)

I also remember :
- zoom in / out in the patcher
- a web browser inside max
- a file browser with a great search function (all files in the path
are in a database)
- new inspectors for all objects (where it’s posible to set
attributes too)
- a new (reaktor like) “performance” view (don’t remember if it’s
called like that..) where user can display only a selection of
objects (at a custom position and size)
- new transparent JSUI
- and a new “automatic debug, optimize, and prevent from crashing”
button (…maybe I only dreamed of this one…)
…

All I’ve seen looks really great, and is very exiting ! not only GUI
stuff, all those new features will really make patching easier and
faster (and look better !)

I hope I didn’t revealed any top secret features… it was a public
presentation, right ?… :-s
