i've experienced the same problem. basically there isn't a logical way to have two separate commands mapped to the same key combination. it has annoyed me for years. hopefully, max 5's redesign will take care of it.

yeah, multiple undo and user-settable grid. Aligning will be much easier.

For now, though, I'd also recommend Max Toolbox by Nathaniel LeCaude --- will save tons of time with max stuff...
