I've given this quite some testing now yet I can't come with any other conclusion that as soon as you use M4L the Max runtime no longer functions, can anyone else confirm this ? I can't figure out why this is no longer working and suspect either a bug or something by design.

I have Live 8.1.3 (Suite) installed which includes an authorization for Max for Live.

Now, I basically restart my PC, start the Max runtime (so Live is out of the picture) and then use its File -> Open menu to load a patch (either one I've downloaded from the web, or one included with my Max installation).

But no matter what I try it always gives out an error message telling me that I should keep a M4L patch open in edit mode so it can route its audio through Live. Shouldn't the runtime act in a stand-alone manner here?

I've even tried downloading the current Max runtime separately and that gives me the same issues. If I try this stuff on my laptop (which has no version of Live installed) then it simply works.

Hope anyone here can shed some light on it, thanks in advance.

You probably have your audio driver prefs set to Live

Save this as a patch somewhere and open it in the runtime. Hopefully you will be able to change the audio driver

I should have thought of that myself (since my main drive here is curiosity about Max' sound engine), but well.. M4L and Max may overlap, in other ways they're quite different.

patches i once used worked fine in runtime, now do not generate any audio output. i tried that patch Andrew Pask posted but nothing seemed to happen? i am new at this, so forgive me. i copied that code and saved as a .maxpat and i got no access to audio routing for runtime. any ideas?

Fire up Live, fire up M4L, edit hit edit and eventually the Max window appears. Now use 'File -> New from clipboard' and then save the patch using File -> Save.

Close Live & Max and when fully done start the runtime. Use File -> Open to load the previous patch and click 'open'. Now change your sound driver accordingly.

When having done that you can load the Max patch you tried to use and it should give you sound.

Dunno if you're ever going going to work with rewire and such, but when I only had a M4L license I eventually designed this one to help me control the runtime a little more (I wrote quite a few (simple) Max patches solely using M4L). Hope this may help too...
