Max/MSP conference/expo united kingdom?

I work for a digital arts center in Leicester in the east midlands and am very keen to host an event similiar to the expo 74 in england.

I believe we have an ideal venue which is centrally located and easily accessable from Leicesters train and bus station. I would also be able to offer cheap 24 hour parking, onsite catering and a possible deal for cut price accomodation with a local hotel.

We are a modern building with several good spaces and great technical support with a good track record of hosting events similiar to this for 100+ people.

My main question is would there be enough interest in this to make it viable?

Is this something that people would travel to attend, I think the event would have to be ticketed but I am keen to keep the cost to a minimum as i’m much more interested in people coming.

Anyway, just throwing the idea out there, it would be really great to hear from people that would be interested in attending this type of event, and also anyone that might be interested in getting involved.

There are a lot of people in Leicester who would attend, provided that the timing was right. Students from the MTI course at DMU tend to be pretty interested in ‘cycling’, as well as the post-grads :)

If you’re talking about the Phoenix, I can vouch for it. It would be a great venue for such an event.

I would go :)

Thanks for your interest. I will definitely make note of it, and watch for other responses to your suggestion.

Our general plan is to have the expo every few years, with the next one this October. No future location plans have been made.

Yes Phoenix Square in Leicester is the place, I believe we can offer excellent facilitioes for this kind of event and would definantly be looking to approach MTI for some contribution if it were to go ahead.

Thanks for the interest

I would definitely come.

I’m definitely up for something like this happening in the UK. I know of a number of university lecturers who would be very interested in bringing students to such an event, let’s keep at it!

As to got to the US is a very far travel for me I was hoping to have something like the expo coming up on the ‘old continent’. So yes this is a mayor +10 from me and I would come over from Spain.

I would definitely be interested in this event. I’d love to go to an expo but can’t afford to get over to the US.

Its great to hear so many people might be interested. If anyone has any thoughts on specifics such as workshops or performance oppertunities that they would like to see it would also be good to hear.

I’m there, and of course I want to see lots of great interactive arty installation/ performance based stuff, but Max being used to create special needs and assistive technology stuff would be a major plus too(sure Brendan would agree).

+1 for assistive/accessible interaction design; just don’t get me started on the Monome :¬P

I’d love to hear from people involved in interactive and assistive learning, we have a great instillation space that would be suitable for this kind of display.

Once again, thanks for all the interest so far…

I am based at a special needs school where we have a ‘sensory studio’, this is an egg shaped room with a triple projector setup, 12 speaker system, banks of LED lights, a moving spotlight, vibro-tactile devices etc etc all controlled with things like the iPad, kinect camera, switches, soundbeam etc. I pretty much do everything with Max and custom electronics, including the edge blending and mapping of the projection. The school is called ‘Three Ways’ and it’s in Bath, if you look at my website there’s links to pictures and videos of the sort of things we are doing. We recently did a mini install of a sensory environment with a 6 speaker setup which wouldn’t be too difficult to recreate. Would be very interested in what you are suggesting.

there is already a couple of ‘MSP nerd nests’ in the UK that do this kind of thing on a much smaller scale. The LAM (Goldsmith and all) is a place to start, or Huddersfield’s MSP Poweruser Symposium as part of the GEMdays (now Electric Spring)…

A European Max/MSP would be a great thing. Don’t forget there are also very active Max/MSP communities in Germany and France (as well as the rest of the continent–I just have more contact with the two named regions). As long as you don’t deliberately ignore the rest of the continent you’ll have people from Reykjavik to Istanbul coming.-) And beyond.

Re interactive/immersive…

I run SEN workshops for eyemusic (Colourscape) using a mobile system built with maxmsp, IR sensors, wii controllers, & dance mat, and also recently built a system somewhat like Luke’s for a mainstream junior school. (I’d love to come and see what you’ve done Luke, if that’s possible)

@ Peter

That would be amazing, if you could give me some pointers as to people or institutions to contact that would be great.

Thanks for the post

Comng from DK, I’d show up depending on price, what the course in actuality offers and of course the date.

Jul 16, 2011 at 6:52pm

Ah, go on, then – I think I could make Leicester from Wales!

@ Home surgery

We’d love to have you, and are very interested in feedback at this stage as to what people would like to see there?

Thanks for the comment
