I recently installed max 6 and I'd say I'm extremely surprised with the application. No longer want to return to something like logic etc.

I've tried different patches which are available elsewhere, but I want to ask you what shall I start with to understand MAX better. As for now it feels like playing some game rather than making music.

Max is a blank canvas, you need a project. What do you want to do with it?

Yeah, of course it's not a replacement for Logic!

I meant I like the way of making sounds(like kicks, snares, noises, some samples for drum machines) out of max, because they're amazingly flexible — I can control almost every single detail.

Also I'd like to connect my guitar and let it flow into max to build unique effects, but the problem is that I can't do it without deep knowledges of max language.

Moving on to experiments now.


Since Apple got their boots in there, I love it; 'tis the one piece of Apple gear I will gladly sing the praises of. Great piece of kit. But it can't do Max things. Cos it isn't intended to do them things. In the same way that MS Access can't do, erm, OpenFrameworks. Or mixed metaphors.

I spent years lambasting people who wanted to build "does-everything" setups in Max. Now I'm approaching that point myself... eep.

Working my way through all the tutorials was the key. And stick to working through them and don't give in just so quickly. Then make your mind up about what you want to build and then build it not matter what, with all the information that you can find.

I find that getting your mind fixed on a certain project and then finding the ways how to actually build it in Max have had a tremendous effect on my learning experience.

Foldh's links are good material. The second link especially so - some of Sams tutorials are good simple projects for new users, some get a bit more complex, but if you persist with them they'll teach you heaps. They are also surprisingly funny- he just veers off into weird tirades. Great stuff.
