Hi,

I’ve just installed a RME HDSP MADI card into a PC which has just this
morning had a fresh install of Windows XP SP2 (3Ghz P4 in an Asus
P4C800-E motherboard, Radeon 9600XT graphics card). When I try to run
Max/MSP, the splash screen gets as far as “initializing etable” and
then it crashes, disappearing completely, with no error message
whatsoever. The RME drivers are the most recent from the RME website.
Google reveals no known issues with this set up.

In a quick test, Plogue Bidule seemed to work perfectly with the card.

Has anyone experienced anything similar with Max? Is there any useful
log file I should look at?

thanks,

Aengus.

Neither quicktime nor quicktime alternative is installed.

Might this make a difference?

Thanks,

Aengus.

PS: I have some additional information, which only confirms that the
problem is to do with the audio/dsp side of things: when I delete all
of the ~ objects from the max-startup folder, then max starts ok, but
crashes as soon as a ~ object is placed in a patcher. It seems that
the reason the splash screen reads ‘initializing etable’ just before
max crashes on startup, is that the ezdac~ object is the first ~
object that max tries to load and it comes alphabetically straight
after the etable object in the max-startup folder.

yep, max won’t start. That error you’re getting is because of it I think. I remember max crashing at startup without quicktime pretty clearly. Why don’t you try installing quicktime alternative then posting the results.

I installed the free version of quicktime from the apple website
before I saw your reply. Max still did not start. The symptoms were
the same as before.

Incidentally, I received a reply from the cycling 74 tech support, who
mentioned having seen problems using max/msp with the RME HDSP MADI
before…

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Just a follow up to my RME HDSP MADI + Max/MSP problems, in case
anyone has this issue in future: After trying many things, I removed
all of the drivers from the /ad and /midi folders, and replaced them
one by one, trying to start max each time. Turns out it was the
Directsound and MME drivers, which must have some problem with the
HDSP MADI drivers. Leaving those drivers out, I can output 64-channels
of audio using the RME ASIO drivers. This, incidentally, is very cool.

Best,
