So what I want to do should be simple yet I cant figure it out :/

I want to send midi notes in a max patch into logic. Basically I want to create my own step sequencer so I will also want to be able to have up to 16 separate sequencer patches. I dont need to deal with audio at all.

Any help or other ideas are very welcome.

In Max simply choose 'from MaxMSP 1' as midi output port. Logic will receive it automatically.

Ya I chose that and I had nothing in Logic. I opened Logic first then Max (not sure if that matters)

Launch order shouldn't matter since Logic recognizes midi ports dynamically.

Right! Thats why I'm confused..... More investigation is in order.

I'm going to be assuming you want to use more than one MIDI channel (for multitrack playback):

After you've set up the max patch correctly (and chosen from MaxMSP1 for the noteout), the rest is settings in Logic.

Create your instrument track. Change midi channel number from All to whatever midi channel you want to use (assuming you're using more than one track).

The next bit, which is completely random but most important:

Settings > Recording > Tick checkbox "Auto demix by channel if multitrack recording"

Also, ensure all the tracks you want to play back are Record Enabled.

I have Max and Logic 9 communicating now through creating a physical input device in the environment window in Logic. The midi data is coming through and I am getting good playback, but I am not able to capture the incoming midi data in Logic and save it in regions. Is there something I am missing? I know it has to be possible.

I have the same problem as Jon. I can hear the MIDI inst. in Logic receiving data from Max but seem unable to record it. The track is record enabled but then when I press record, it doesn't capture. Obviously I can send the MIDI track's output to a bus and then audio record on another track with the input set to the same bus, but I'd rather record the MIDI data so I can edit velocity etc.

In case you cabled incoming MIDI directly to channelstrips in the Logic Environment, this does not work for recording. You need to connect to the sequencer input. You may split the signals if you want but without going through the sequencer input Logic does not record.
