MIDI vexation

September 5, 2008 | 5:36 pm

I’ve been suffering with a MIDI problem that I cannot crack, and my
last step has failed, so I’m now looking for help.

My issue is that when once I use the mod wheel from my Korg K61P I no
longer get any sound output through the AU DLS Synth 1. I’ve just
gone back to the MIDIBasics tutorial to step through that and see what
will happen in the most basic circumstance. I open the patch, check
my midiin and midiout devices, play the keyboard, hear the synthesized
piano notes. Same thing works for the message box example. Then I
play with the ctlin example, and once I move that mod wheel, no
sound. When I play the keyboard, I see the midi notes coming in, and
the AU DLS Synth 1 is still selected, but there’s no sound. It
appears midiout is being broken from the mod wheel, but I can’t be
sure. Closing the patch and reopening fails to solve the issue.
Closing Max and relaunching does. But that’s clearly problematic.

I’m not saying the problem is Max, it may be in the Korg driver, etc.,
but if anyone has experienced anything similar, I would appreciate any
suggestions to assist my trouble-shooting.

TIA

Without seeing the patch, it’s a little hard to offer much in the way
of concrete opinions.

That said, I have seen some curious behavior, mostly with channel 1
with the AU DLS synth. Once channel 1 is bad, do you still get sound
out of other channels?

Try to send a 127 on controller No. 7. If it helps, you have to look
where you send Midi volume message to the Synth.

Sometimes one can forget also that low velocities produce very low
volumes…

As noted already, without a patch, all is a guess…
