Migrating to Max5 : .pat vs .maxpat

June 27, 2008 | 7:36 pm

Hi,
I’ve just upgraded to Max5 (huzzah!) and I’m trying to figure out the best way to migrate all my patches.

what I did, was port all my 4.6 file preferences to max5.

Max5 has no problem loading my 4.6 .pat files, but then it wants to save them in the .maxpat format. No problem, but then I have the same patch, as both .pat and .maxpat in the same folder. So, when I enter the patch name in a new patch, which patch will it load, the .pat or the .maxpat ?

That’s a rhetorical question at this point, though; whenever I try to save the patch as a .maxpat, max5 crashes after saving the file!

So, maybe I should back up and take another look at my method for migration. How have the rest of you done it? I’d like to keep this as painless as possible, and also not screw up the 4.6 install.

honestly, I was kinda hoping for a "click here to migrate all your patches from max 4.6" button, kinda like you get when you install firefox.

thanks for all your help and support.

[any mspers in NYC wanna meet up?]

what exactly do you mean by: "port all my 4.6 file preferences to max5"?

what i did to avoid the double up in the search path was to exclude my max4.x patches from the max5 file paths. ie my max4.x patches were in \usersmemaxmsp so i renamed that directory to maxmsp4 and created a new one called maxmsp5. the max4 folder is not in my max5 search path. i also only ported the ones i wanted to work on/use as needed so its not a big project just open and save a few at a time…

with the crash i can’t help you, i think we’ll need more info tho, but i dont think i have and good followup guidance questions besides the first…

good luck,
j5

What I do, keep the Max 4 and the Max 5 search path strictly seperate.
As I do have lots of dependencies, I just made a copy of the folder
withh all my abstractions in it and moved it into the Max 5 search path.
Now the place for the newly created .maxpat will be correct already. Max
5 will load preferably the .maxpat if the .pat is still around. I can
easily later delete the obsolete .pat files…

By running through my collection in an order of importance. That way I
also get a picture about abstractions which are sort of obselete. For
example I have a listsum abstraction, which I’d do now with zl, same for
comparing symbols and lists, its covered with zl now.

I just don’t convert the obsolete ones, but keep them for eventual
backward compatibility, or replace them with an abhaXion that just
contains the zl…

It shouldn’t (and doesn’t crash here). You should report crashes
following the bug reporting guidelines, that make it possible and is
required for the elves to make the crash go away. It will help others
even if your setup might be very special and rare.
Just imagine you never came across this problem and suddenly you face it
five minutes before a concert… It’s better if as many possible
problems which show up are understood and fixed….

For me the duplication of my patches basically did that…
