I'm working on an installation with a Windows machine which handles motion tracking with a series of webcams. I only need 3 or 4 running at a time, but so far have not been able to use more than two at once.

I know that there have been issues with multiple cams in Max, but most people have claimed their problems were a result of using many of the same cam or some restriction in the cam's drivers. As for the confusion over identical devices, I've tried this with 3 unique webcams as well and have only been able to use any two them at a time (doesn't matter which). Also, I've called logitech about this and they've explained that you should be able to use as many of their cams as you can muster simultaneously so long as the software you're using allows it (which I've found to be true).

What's really annoying is that devlist comes up with all connected cams (it will recognize devices on all 8 of my USB ports), but still only lets me open two at a time. I'm getting a little anxious as my deadline is approaching quickly. There has to be a way around this - thoughts?

Hi there, i would like to know how you even got two webcams working in the same patch - im new to this as well and I havnt figured that out yet, could you please show me how?

I don know about usb web cams but with dv you need to plug each cam in individual firewire card, not hub. Maybe is the same with usb.

I seem to have it working now with two of the same USB cameras. Ill see how long it lasts! But I have heard the same thing as you have mentioned. Ill keep that in mind.

But I'm looking in to a way to have 4 greyscale usb camera's into a patch windows/mac and record the fourstreams to disk. Would that be possible?

Does any one has some experience running a lot of cameras over usb?

if you just want to record, buy a DVR video or dvr card with 4*25pfs

if you want to get reliable result inside jitter i would only recommend

one usb camera is unreliable , so 4 is even more

this is my personal experience, cycling will/can not publish whats

abilities.

firweire cameras.
one usb camera is unreliable , so 4 is even more

The thing is that we're looking into buying a motioncapture setup from www.naturalpoint.com and they only work with usbcameras.

Since we are looking for a setup with double use, point tracking and documentary recording of our experiments at university I specifically asked for these USB camera's.

We've been looking into systems to have a minimum of 4 camera's capturing to disk at the same time but it seems to be a very hard thing to ask companies.

We've had a demo of industrial firewirecamera's by unibrain and they claim to be able to do just that but at a price of 800 euro's a camera this is a bit excessive. Especially since point tracking in the optitrack setting seems to be much easier to setup.

So actually we just need a system that can record a decend image and can be used for motion analysis/tracking.

you should have mentioned your talking about natrualpoint, this are not your

average usb cam. from what i know they do a lot of their image processing

a bit like the wii remote. that means im not sure its trival to connect it

to any old source. they offer an sdk, and you should contact them for
